Learning Acoustic Guitar

A week ago I bought my first guitar, a black acoustic-electric fender, but I'm only learning to play.

I want to see how far I can get learning on my own with out private instruction or anything like that, so far my resources are these:

http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm

http://www.medianmusic.com/

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com

Anyone have any tips/guidelines/websites/advice that can help me learn to play quicker/better?

Learn the chords A-G in major. They're the basic chords everyone needs to know.

Once you get them nailed and can change in any combination without thinking then you're good to go.

I know it's boring, but try to learn a bit of theory as early as possible. Nothing too complex, just learn some scales and try to understand [garden tool] the notes in them work together. It's harder to learn later on, which is what i did. But starting to learn it when you start to play will make learning in general easier, and make you a better player overall.

you ever heard of guitar method? it starts of with the basics but then takes it a long way. The CD is cool, it changes it into a guitar hero like atmoshpere where it gives you points for hitting the right notes. the cd has ohter stuff to.

I've been thinking of learning acoustic. I've been in band for 8 years (4 years saxophone in middle school and 4 years percussion in high school) and I know how to read music extremely well. I'm guessing I wouldn't have trouble learning notes?

Yeah, you'll probably be okay once you figure out where they correspond to the fretboard, which isn't too hard. Although it's useful to learn to read tabs as well, seeing as most online resources have the songs you'll want to play tabbed, not sheet-musicked (if that can be considered a word). I played saxophone as well for a couple of years in junior high, and it's surprising how much transfers between the two instruments.
