Difference between Jews and Christians?

It's strange... I don't meet any evangelistic people in real life; only on the internet. I've met Christians, Jews, Jehovah's Witnesses, Plymouth Brethren Mormons, Quakers*, Sikhs, "insert large list of religions here", and none of them has ever pushed their religion at me. Seriously, even the Jehovah's Witnesses, to whom, I gather it is essential. Does anyone else here from England get evangelised(?)?

Back on topic, though: Jews and Christians. Of the Jews that I've met, all have been quite seriously Jewish--it's a big part of their lives, though they don't make a big thing of it.

Saying that, none of the Christians I know are particularly evangelistic either, as I said.

None of the Jews I know are actually 'Jewish' if you get my meaning. They're jewish by birth, and that's as far as it goes. As far as they're concerned, their jewishness is just an excuse to poke fun at themselves for a laugh.

"Does anyone else here from England get evangelised(?)?"

Dude, you ever been to oxford street? Constant evangelism there. Only problem is, it's bad, and makes me embarrased. Frankly, they're embarrasing to my religion. I don't blame them for trying, but surely their lack of results should reveal something?

Yet just down the road is Hillsong. If you go to see We Will Rock You on a sunday, be surprised. An entire theatre full of youth (well, youth-ish) giving praise ot the Lord. Also one of the most succesful in England. I was there around a month ago, when the Senior Pastor from Oz was over. He commented on how the theatre was completely full, people were standing in the aisles. While someone like me would think that's a good thing (being an Anglican at heart), he said "You Brits don't have enough faith - you should have got a bigger theatre!". I just found that hilarious. It's that type of attitude that Christians in England should have. Instead, we get old people complaining that

1) there arn't enough youth in the church

2) that the youth are ruining the country.

Stupid English.

I have indeed--I saw not a single person evangelising; not any of the times I've been. Perhaps they only do it at certain times of day? Maybe I'm just the guy around whom no-one evangelises--a bit like that character in So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, around whom all the rain clouds gather (so that it's ALWAYS raining where he is).

Maybe it's like the Jamster adverts--they're terrible, but who's the first ringtone company you think of? I can't see that working with religion, though :).

As simple as that, oh and Christians arent as strict on money donations and stuff, I think Jews have to pay 10% of their wages to the church or something in Israel :/

Judaism around here isn't like that at all. Pay if you want. They don't pass around a plate at any service I've ever been to. With that said, I'd say Christians are much more strict when it comes to donations. Maybe you're thinking of Mormons?

American Jews have those awesome sideburns too? When I go to Antwerp, and I walk over the street I see a lot of jews, and they have these amazing sideburns, looks really cool!

I don't have them, and I can say that I've never actually seen a Jew like that (except for in the movies of course). It's definately an Orthodox thing. That or if you don't shave for a few months you should get a similar effect.

Not lashing out on you or anything, but what is it that people find "funny" or even "cool" about being Jewish? It's consistent among the Jews that I know, and it's often the first thing mentioned when I am introduced ("Hi, this is Peter. He's Jewish.") Even though I don't go to temple or anything really Jewish, I don't see why people have such an interest in this? It's not like "Hey, this is Joe, and he's Mormon." It seems that you're either Jewish or you're the other people. I don't "poke fun" at myself, I really have no reason to in most cases. Certainly not for my religion. I'm not complaining or anything, I just find it interesting and puzzling.

One thing I've noticed is that jews don't seem to want to tout their religion at every opportunity whereas a lot (obviously not all) of christians do whenever the subject comes up.

There seems to be an awful awful lot more tradition in most jews than there is in at least church of england christians.

That's one thing I love about the religion, no pressure to do anything. They don't try to convert people, and I think that's really cool. Also, if you want to eat pork, go ahead. Nothing bad will happen. If you follow the religion seriously (to the point where you'd believe something bad would happen to you) then you wouldn't worry about it, because you would aready follow the rules (they're more like guidelines anyway). You don't go to heaven or hell in Judaism, but when you die it's about how close to God you will be.

There's a lot more tradition because Judaism is not just a religion, it's a culture. That's one of the biggest differences between Judaism and Christianity. I can sit here and say I'm Jewish even though I don't go to services more than twice a year and I don't keep kosher, etc., because with the religion comes the foods, dances, music, and whatnot. Christianity certainly doesn't have all of that.

Christ was a Jew just as many millions were at the time. Judas allegedly killed him or played a part in it, and Judas was a Jew, so many people blame the Jews for killing Jesus. However my take on it is that if the Jews hadn't killed Jesus, there wouldn't be any Christianity.

Thats not entirely true,Peter. Jesus created the first christian congregations; Matthew 3: 13 -16 and Matthew 4:18

Christianity had already excisted for 3 and a half year when he was killed.

- "I am willing to die...I mean try" - Jewelfire (Want to go bossing?)
-"we tried, we cried and we died!" - Limparse (What happens to old farts and tarts on monster-hunts)
- "...and we found out that there are as many ways to get to warriors guild
...as there are elders trying to get there" - Lysi
*snods agely* sorry... *nods sagely* - Brammy

-"Equality is being treated the SAME as everyone else;

not having special treatment and unique things added in to everything." - Sy_Accursed

I disagree. Jesus had to be killed - he was the passover lamb (symbolically).

-He had to be perfect, like the lamb (see Hebrews 9:14 for Jesus, Exodus 12:5 for the lamb)

-This sacrifice saves us from death (see John 3:16 for Jesus, Exodus 12:13 for the lamb)

-It was sacrificed to bring us life! (Canaan was the symbol of true "life" in the new testament - it was so because the Israelites had to put their faith in God and let Him do it for them - this is what the Christian life is today!(see Galations 2:20 for Jesus, Exodus 3:8 for the lamb)

There are more parallels but I won't go to indepth. I believe He had to die.

Wow! The mods are arguing with each other! I want popcorn ;)

Technically, Christianity began after Jesus died/was ressurected. Without the ressurection, there'd be no forgiveness of sins, so no Christianity. There were followers beforehand, and although Jesus forgave them, it wasn't technically 'Christian'. They were saved, but they weren't Christian. Kind of odd. Fortunately Jesus died, and no the rest of us can be saved as well.

If you want to be even more technical, 'Christianity' didn't start until even later. The term 'Christian' was first used as an insult by the roman soldiers towards those they were feeding to the lions. Eventually the people started wearing the term with pride. Kind of like how the word 'chav' started as an insult, and now the chavs are proud of it.

Peter, about what I said before. Say if one of them slips up while talking, mixes his words, and it ends up sounding dodgy, or something else funny. We all laugh, he'll giggle at himself, and then say "Must be the Jew in me." or something like that. It's not really anything more than that. For a while I thought he was just joking, it was only last year that I found out he was actually Jewish!

The scriptures I showed you proved what Jesus was doing from the moment he was baptized; he funded the first Christain congregation. The fact that he was killed 3 years and 6 months later had nothing to do with that.

The first members of that congregation didnt called them selfs 'followers of Jesus' = christians, because they didnt worshiped Jesus (like many christians do today), they worshiped his Father, like Jesus him self did: John 14: 28 :"...the Father is greater than I am."

Why Jesus had to be proven obedient to his death, has nothing to do with this topic, we are merely discussing the difference between Jews and Christains
