Reformat.

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

Are you wanting everything wiped completely? Including the O/S? This is the only way to really make sure it can't be accessed again.

Just doing a simple recovery/reformat will still allow some form of previous data to be recovered.

If your reselling it, just wipe the entire thing with this:

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

*That will erase everything, including the O/S, so you'd have to reinstall the O/S.

Best way to do it if your reselling it.

+1 to DBAN

But before going to DBAN, make sure you have the product key (the like 25 character key that is used to register the Operating System), and the OS disc. Without the OS disc, DBAN will turn your hard drive into an expensive brick.

If you want a less thorough deletion, use the OS disc (any disc will work, as long as its the same edition as your OS, such as XP Professional, and you have the product key), and do a windows format, by booting from the disc (insert it, shut down the computer, restart, enter BIOS, by hitting delete or whatever key says use -key- to enter BIOS, and set it to boot from discs first).

And should it be all scratched to hell, or you don't happen to have/find one, then all hope is not lost.

http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

That key finder should get your that number (it's worked for me in the past). If you don't trust it, download it and scan it with your arsenal of antivirus programs, or use Housecall or Kaspersky's online scanner. Both will allow you to scan the file and check for viruses, etc, although there hasn't been any problems in the past wit it from anyone I know or anything I've read.

Reformatting is of NO use, as there are many software which will undelete the formatted files.

You have to overwrite the files, by using special softwares, like this one

http://www.killdisk.com/

You must pay special attention through, since your so called recovery disc may NOT contain the Windows Installation, but a small program which initiates the Windows Installation Program hidden in a hidden partition of your harddisk. That part should NEVER be removed or your recovery disc won't help you.

By the way, you cannot directly use the CD key in that particular label to install retail version of Windows. But by using a recovery disc, that CD key will be automatically inputted

What the bloody kittens are you talking about, cant use the key to reinstall a version of windows? You saying I can't use the XP install disc and the product key and have a working version of windows? That's where I declare you wrong.

And KillDisk isn't really worth it (I mean, it's 50 bucks...come on...srsly?)

Well, I'm pretty sure that you can use an OEM key to install windows.. Especially since the copy of Windows I'm using right now is an OEM copy that I installed myself..

And DBAN does more than a simple format. It actually does (pretty much) exactly the same thing as KillDisk..

My first idea would be to use a recovery partition or install disc (if you have one), though. That's the easiest and will make the laptop like it was when you bought it. If you have recovery discs instead of a partition, I'd go over your drive with DBAN first, unless you don't care about whether someone can recover what's on the drive.

Well, it depends on the situation. There are 2 types of OEM

One is you buy a OEM edition, which you get a installation disc and you install it yourself. For this type, I must say, YES

Another type is the system is preinstalled by someone else when you purchased the PC (maybe your PC manufacturer did that for you), since Microsoft policy says that PC manufacturer cannot give you the installation disc, so you only get a CD called "recovery disc", in this case, NO
