im having a little problem with a process taking up a lot of memory...

its scvhost[Caution: Executable File], i know you have to keep it running...

there are 13 scvhost[Caution: Executable File] always running... i don't know if that's normal

but that's not the problem

There is one that starts out at about 200,000k when i log on

by the time i turn my comp off its really close to 300,000k

is there any way to reduce the memory it takes?

or scan the processes to see if its not a virus or anything?

I currently have avast! and spybot

and i have vista home professional x64

any help would be great ::'

Do you mean scvhost[Caution: Executable File] or svchost[Caution: Executable File] ?

Scvhost[Caution: Executable File] is a virus.

If this is the case, run a virus scan (and a program like spybot search and destroy if nessecary) and remove it.

Of course, a virus can name it self "svchost[Caution: Executable File]" to make it look legit, so run a virus scan just to be sure.

Svchost[Caution: Executable File] is a windows programs that hosts a group of services.

If you want to know the programs being hosted you can do the following:

windows button+r (run), type "cmd", type "tasklist /svc" to see the programs being run.

If you see a what program takes up so much power, you can post it back here =)

As OldJoe said it could be a virus.

If a scan turns up blank, then its a Windows issue.

For some reason Windows bugs or glitchs can have a big effect on the svchost[Caution: Executable File] process.

The quickest way to sort this out is to run Windows Updates. In my experience it fixes 99.9% of svchost[Caution: Executable File] issues.

Im not a vista user but i know a few things about windows.

It may be down to an interactive desktop theme or a heap of programs that you may have installed.

Best thing to do is go to add/remove and delete anything your not using.

Also close things like MSN, AIM, Bitlord(or any download program) while your not using it as these all use services which add to the usage.
