Numberkills
Does it increase defence against magic based attacks such as Abberant Spectres or Cave Horrors? Or is it only used for melee? This question has been on my mind for a while. 99 Fletching || 288/309 Quest Points || 99 Cooking || 122 Combat || 99 Defence || 2000+ Total ||16/25 80+'s || 99 Firemaking || 99 Woodcutting || 2011 Goals : All skills 80+ | 99 Magic | 99 Farming | 99 Thieving | 99 Hunter | 99 Range "The Unexamined Life is not worth living" - Socrates

This question has been on my mind for a while. Your defence level does not protect you from magic so therefor bosting it will not help protect you from magic. Raising your magic level will protect you from magic attacks. Does it really matter whether I was right? #-oThis is Tipit. There is nothing more important than being right. Lacoste
No, your magic level determines you mage defence, along with your equipment.
D Jay99
Your defence against magic is determined by a few things: your defence level, your magic level and your armour's magic defence. Your magic level is about four times as important as your defence level when defending against magical attacks. Link to a guide about this stuff. Also, max_miller, your defence level does help when defending against magic, although your magic level is more important.

green9090
Lol, the replies here are actually wrong. Your magic defense is based half on your magic and half on your defense. So for me, at 95 magic and 99 defense, my effective magic defense level is (95 + 99)/2 = 97. If I take a super defense pot, it becomes (95 + 113)/2 = 104. Still quite a difference, and you notice it if you take a super defense potion at specters. Plus, they're SO cheap, there's no reason not to. If you run out of space for herbs just drop the potion.
