This was my first sprite sig that I've ever made.

Made using GIMP 2.0

Made Another with some of the comments in mind

GIMP 2.4.6 Used

Gimp 2.0? That is seriously outdated. First thing is I think you should consider getting the gimp 2.4, it's free as always and has more improvements than the change in version number implies.

Take dsavi's advice. The main things you need to work on are the background and text.

Turns out I have GIMP 2.4

The icon just says 2

Update to 2.45 for bug fixes. Colours are quite good but you have to work on those things little mentioned.

I really like the area around the sprite.

I think the sig is too long though, cut off about an inch on each end. Work on the font as well. Not bad for a first.

I've never done a sprite myself.

Thanks guys! Do you think adding a C4D would improve the background missing-ness?

It would, but don't just paste it on. Smudging it (With the vine brush at 1 spacing, no jitter) slightly would help I suppose, but I don't know a link to a good technique for that.

2.46 is out :P (With fixes in PSD layer mask support :) )

Yeah, I know what you mean by that now though. My icon says the same thing. So yeah, you're fine.

Adding a C4D or two is normally a good idea. Put it in the layers under the sprite.

New looks quite good, I like the burnt sort of feel to it.

New one is worse to be honest, Too many colours and as Little say it feels burnt/over contrasted on the right side. two different flows kind of which makes the signature uneven. Black line dividing the signature up the render & background. Effects are also somewhat boring and doesn't really go well together. Not good to be honest :(.

The first one is alright, but get rid of the black stroke with the text on it. The background is pretty boring here too.

Background is better on the second one, I don't really like the overcontrasted feel of it either though. The text placement and font aren't great, try not to place text in corners.
