Enforce a megathread policy

A megathread is a thread about a subject too small to have its own forum, but so big that you'll have an infinite amount of topics sprouting up about it.

My first example is a megathread for the upcoming PVP worlds, which are months away. Myself, and I'm sure many people who frequent the General discussion forum are getting tired of seeing a different thread for:

"How will the pvp updates effect:

  • fish

    armor

    capes

    achievements

    attitude

    players

    rates

    members

    updates

    quests

    cooking

    skills

every little thing under the sun

Does everything need its own thread? No. So when it comes to big and much anticipated subjects, I think a megathread should be created and all the discussion on said topic should take place in the megathread.

Imo, when you have 10 different discussions trying to be held in one big topic, it just doesn't work. I also think that the PVP update thing is a rare occurrence, it's not like every update gets this much discussion. ;)

I've seen megathreads work in every other forum I've ever been a member of, I don't see why Tip.It would suddenly be an exception.

And you wouldn't have 10 different discussions, assuming people can read the thread. So for example, you'd have the:

PVP world's effect on _____ megathread, which would stop yet another thread every single time someone saw an item they think may be effected.

I count four active topics directly related to the PvP worlds. I also see 2 or 3 that could be counted as indirectly related to the PvP update.

I don't know where you're getting such over exaggerated results from? Link me to all these little topics, or whatever you're finding? Or are these things inside of the 7 possible topics I've counted? Or what?

This is just a phase, same thing for Summoning, same thing for Funorb, and any update Jagex has wanted to hype about.

In the future if Jagex is consistently doing hypes like these, as in giving a month or two notice before the update for speculations, perhaps we could organize several megathreads, but even then Jagex would have to hype up 5-7 large updates for the megathreads to be useful.

I also agree that keeping things in one place only isn't the best idea. So many things can be discussed to such a large extent, confining them all is only going to hinder the quality of those discussions.

Also, I don't see posts saying 'O wow, another thread about the pvp update'. Actually, what else is there to discuss? If something better were to come in, then it would take a better priority over the PvP updates, but nothing has, so the PvP update discussions are still in the top to be discussed.

Then again you could just be in the minority who doesn't like discussions to go past 1-2 weeks in General, but most people are still excited and enthusiastic about the updates.

But yea not needed.

Having read this thread, and having seen megathreads in the past... Here are my thoughts...

Megathreads for this stuff will only cause more problems than they could ever cure... So I am totally and completely against having one for these PvP updates that are coming... DOWN WITH MEGATHREADS!!!

On a less extravagant level, I actually agree with DVD. There's never a need to limit discussion in any way. TIF went through a stage a ways back when every large topic was turned into a sticky and it just didn't work too well for the forums. It'll be an exciting time for rs players I'd imagine, so there's no reason to contain it all into one thread. There are always a lot of different elements and effects of every update, and aside from the main update thread that discussion is normally held on, if people want to have discussions about certain elements of an update, more power to them.
