Yes it is, maybe you are not dropping them correctly, there are different ways to do it.

Are you the "Questing" type? I would suggest the easy "The Lost Tribe" quest it takes place under the Lumby castle. (It gives 3k in exp for doing quest and acess to the Dorgeshuun mines and more.)

Once it's completed you can mine iron ore (fast) and sell it a couple of feet away to Mistag or the bank in Lumby Castle which is just a few feet further away. Yeah, I know iron is 15 or more exp less then granite, but I just hate doing something for nothing. (No offense power miners.)

There is also the quest "Between a Rock" it give 5k exp mining and gives you access what I like to call the, "Gold fields." Gold gives you a constant 65 exp vs granite 50-60-75. You can have the ferryman bank 'em for you for a small fee. (Then use your enchanted Goldsmithing gloves from the "Family Crest" quest and smelt all your gold ores into bars you get 56.25 exp versus 22.5 exp.)

Anyway you look at it, there are alternatives, to the "oh so [garden tool] hum" fun of mining. -.- Ciao!

BTW - You might also work on the Varrok Achievement Diary to get Varrok (mining) armor. (Which gives you the chance of 2 ores vs 1.)

If you want money, stick with granite. In fact, if you want smithing exp it would still be a good idea to stick with granite since you can buy the ore.

Using Brimhaven, I mine 40 gold ores (And picking up the gold ore that spawns) in 7 minutes. This is about 8 trips an hour, which gets me 320 gold ores an hour; which is worth 160k. (500 x 320) I mine the gold ore with a terrorbird, and teleport to my house which is in Brimhaven. After I finish mining, I just teleport back with a dueling ring. A ring of dueling is about 900 gp, and 8 teleports costs me 2525 gp, and two terrorbird pouches cost me 660 gp. A total of 4085 gp is spent per hour.

When mining granite, it takes me 12 minutes average to mine 40 500g granite chunks. This is 5 trips an hour, so 200 chunks of granite. 500g granite is worth 1200 gp last time I checked, but it jumps around and I've seen it go up to 1300 each. Assuming it's 1200 each, that's 240k an hour, 80k more gp than gold. 240k gp / 500 gp = 480 gold ores. You have to do the quest Enakhra's Lament in order to teleport close to the mine (Camulet). After you mine a full load, teleport back to castle wars with a ring of dueling. I also use the enchanted water tiara, which is the reward from the quest Dealing with Scabaras. I'm not too sure how much that costs me in water runes, (I should actually calculate this!) but I assume about 30 charges a trip. Each charge is 3 water runes, so 450 water runes an hour. (30 x 3 x 5) I also use 3 terrorbird pouches an hour, so 990 gp is spent there. Water runes are 16 gp each, so 7200 gp is spent there, along with 990 gp for the terrorbird pouches and 900 gp for the ring of dueling. This adds up to 9090 gp.

Gold mining: (4085 / 500 = 8.17 gold ores. 320 - 8.17 = 311.83 gold ores) you get 311.83 gold ores an hour after deductions by mining at Brimhaven.

Granite mining: (9090 / 1200 = 7.575 granite. 200 - 7.575 = 192.425 500g granite) you get 192.425 500g granite an hour, which is worth 230910 gp at 1200 each granite. 230910 / 500 = 461.82 gold ores an hour if you mine granite.

This is a difference of 149.99 gold ores. You also earn more exp as well.

*Note, I always wear Varrock Armor 3 when I mine, so results may be different without the armor.*
