krisc6
Im about to build a new rig from scratch (well someone else is goping to help me) and i need to choose a good windows OS. Heres the options(im discounting ultimate because i dont think it warrants the price or purpose.) Vista Home basic(32bt) Vista Home basic(64bt) Vista Home Premium (32bt) Vista Home Premium (64bt) Windows xp Home OEM Windows xp Pro OEM It will be abel to run any of them but i want to know which would be the best for gaming and multitasking.Im unsure whether to jump to vista(currently using xp on pc and vista on laptop) purely because ive heard of frustrations and the resources it takes but i will need this to last about 3-4 years so it might be worth jumping over to vista. So yeah which one would be best?
dsavi
Vista home premium. You probably don't want to bother with 64 bit.
krisc6
Does that impact on stability or performance if i have a system which can easily run 64 bit but is runnning 32 :?
ClareJonsson
64 bit Vista would be better, it's also backward compatible with 32 bit applications. Unlike XP 64 bit which is a nightmare. [Assist-X]
dsavi
As long as you're not planning on hacking your system files, which was what I was thinking of but on second thought you're probably not interested.
krisc6
Hmm after asking a pc builder i was told that if im having 4gb of RAM its reccomendable to get 64 bit vista so i guess thats what i will be selecting.
das1330
Yep, 64 bit vista home premium is your best bet. If you want any significant amount of RAM you will need a 64 bit OS, and as clare said XP 64 bit is a true nightmare, since it was never intended to be a regular consumer desktop OS. eggzs
64bit vista premium, best compromise between basic and ultimate versions plus it supports 3.5gb+ RAM which is the way of the future.
dsavi
I wish I had 64 bit... But I have heard that you can upgrade from 32 for free, I'm researching that now.
ClareJonsson
You may want to consider dual booting with Vista 64bit and a minimal XP for older game compatibility. But if you'er not going to be running those older games, stick with Vista as you're going to be seeing some of the newer games will be Vista only as DirectX 10 will not be supported on XP. If you're going to be dual booting, Install XP first then Vista 2nd. Rule of thumb for MS when installing software, older stuff first. One thing regarding 4Gb on Vista: A 32bit Operating system cannot physically address 4Gb of RAM as it doesn't have enough address registers, but with Vista SP1 MS produced a work around which sort of pages the RAM allowing you to use the full 4Gb. Please note this will not be as efficient as Vista 64Bit which will be able to address 4Gb natively. 64bit is faster anyway due to the fact it can shuffle data around faster than a 32bit OS can, obviously! Orpheus
Only thing that ticks me off though is that if any games I want become Dx10 only, then i'll have to fork out the 200 bucks for Vista. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal. OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.

They won't for a while. There are millions of users still on XP, considering how bad the PC-gaming industry is doing contra consoles, no one would like to lock out all those customers on XP. I don't know for how long, but i guess they will still make DX9 games until atleast Windows 7.
