September 3, 200817 yr Going to uni next year hopefully, just want to try out a few things to see what there like. First of, got a C++ tut I want to read though. Where the hell do I type the code though? I understand I need a complier as well, any recommendations? What programs would you use to model and texture as well? Just trying to see what these things are like to see if I enjoy them. September 3, 200817 yr You could you dev c++ which is free and has a built in compiler. If you just want to write the code and already have another compiler you could use Notepad++.
September 4, 200817 yr I would recommend the c++ module for Eclipse, even though I don't know anything about it at all, I have used it for some n00b Java and the UI is great. Of course, it's free.
September 4, 200817 yr I would recommend Code::Blocks as a free C++ IDE. Dev C++ is out of date and I've never properly used Eclipse. September 4, 200817 yr What programs would you use to model and texture as well? If you want to have fun playing with 3D modelling and textures, give Art of Illusion a go. That image in my signature was created with AOI, and so was this: [Assist-X]
September 4, 200817 yr As another option for model/texturing (that is free) I would try blender. You'd probably find a lot more documentation for it than AoI. And if you want somewhat of an industry standard try 3D Studio max or Maya, but they either cost money or you .... yeah.

I tried Blender and it's kinda confusing, but I'm no way a pro at 3D modelling/texturing, I just dabble. [Assist-X]

Some people find 3D Studio max really confusing but I love the UI. Then some people fine Maya really easy yet I hate it :P . Of course it also depends on what he wants to use the 3D modeling for.
September 4, 200817 yr Author Thanks guys and girls. Thought id have a go at the C++ stuff first then try out the modeling stuff later on. Quite sure on what I want to do at uni now anyway.
