Mr. D. V. Devnull,

Unfortunately you have a knack for saying things that appears to rub people up the wrong way, may I suggest you take a step back sometimes before pressing the submit button and choosing your wording carefully.

Thanks,

Clare.

I'll try to in the future, Madam. ;) ... BTW, I have stuck disclaimers on posts in the past that I was certain that people would take the wrong way... However, it looks like I totally goofed and missed one this time. ... Thank you for the heads-up and refresh. ::'

Well, he was right though, and I'm sorry if I did something wrong by trying to say something funny.

Now we should get back on topic I guess

There we go we're all happy again, and it's the weekend too YIPPEEEE :)

Speak for yourself...I'm spending my weekend cleaning out 2 malware-infested computers (XP Antispyware 2009 anybody?), and setting up one as a test server so I can learn PHP and whatnot easier.

Which is also why I'm glad this topic is around, because it will help me with cleaning up these computers.

Although, I will thank you for hopefully straightening out some of the feuding going on in these forums (it's getting pretty tiresome to read).

So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? Good job.
What scares me is that you're like 10 years old.
-.- im not that freaking young
You were a couple years ago.
It's not racist if its true.
Hmm... I wonder how one goes about throwing someone out a window in a mystic fashion :-k

The mental image for that is freaking awesome.

Also, @D V Devnull & sbridea2000:

First-off, let me say upfront, that I don't consider this spam, I think its just a case of the discussion going in a different direction...all under the same broad topic of good security software, yes?

But, its all good though, guys (and gal? I think). Just a case of misunderstanding I suppose? But we can all learn from this and move on, yes?

After all we're all working towards the same goal, yes? i.e. Helping others and sharing useful information, and learning at the same time

----------------------------------------------------------------

As an aside though,

When Clare mentioned that bit about mods for this forum...it got me to thinking:

-I remember back when I first ever knew about tip.it forums...around like early 2005, and I came to the tech forum for the first time, I remember certain users use to have some sort of um..."tech wiz banner" under their usernames, which indicated they were persons designated to help with problems.

Obviously though, that system is no longer in use...anyone was around back then, or anyone knows why tip.it stopped using it?

The reason I say this is because, when you look through most of the threads, you find many users offering to help, which is a good thing, don't get me wrong...but when it comes to serious issues like say a Trojan or something like that...I think it may be more re-assuring to the person who is asking for help to see some sort of accreditation from the persons who may be helping them...so that they would at least have an idea that the information/help they are receiving is coming for a credible source and not just some random person, who despite their good intentions, could actually do more harm than helping...due to inaccuracy.

Just some food for thought

I know I'm new to the forums and everything, but I've seen time and time again how McAfee can destroy computers. I suggest you dump it immediately and replace it with a different AV program. If you search the web you'll find a few really good free AV software out there. I'm old fashioned and have left my faith in AVG.

I've also gotten completely rid of Windows Defender(I had too many problems running programs) and have, sad to say it, banned Spybot from my computer.

-Thanks for your input rwinner16, but I think we already established that McAfee isn't good

-Your bad experience from using McAfee though, serves as another reason not to use it, and I thank you for sharing. =D> I sincerely hope that other users of this forum who read this will now see that we in the tech forum, know what we're talking about when we say that McAfee is not a good anti-virus.

-However, I am very alarmed that you're using AVG, because frankly, in my humble opinion, AVG is just as bad as McAfee is.

Also, as you rightly said, there are alot of better anti-virus programs out there, both free and paid versions. If by chance you haven't seen the other threads in the forum about this, then you should know that, in my humble opinion of course, I highly recommend Avast! HOME as a free anti-virus and NOD32 as a paid anti-virus.

Avast! found here: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

NOD32: found here: http://www.eset.com/

-Also, you say that you don't have Windows Defender or Spybot S&D. I sincerely hope you still have some sort of spyware-removal program. Ad-Aware 2008 is a good (FREE) option to try, found here: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

I think I was mainly using AVG because they used to be good. I guess I'm just naive and thought they would actually fix their problems. I just installed Avast and am trying it now.

I use ad-aware daily. I sort of have everything set up to go off automatically a 1am.

Ad-aware, AV program, CCleaner(registry part, and temp files) Degramenter program(currently using Auslogics), and Error Checker(full session).

Guys have any tips on what I can do to keep my comp safe? $3200 was alot of money for a college kid.

Why would you spend $3200 on a computer?

You're doing everything you can, except maybe a firewall(you should have one though)

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

First, don't have everything go at 1am...Having multiple things scanning at once is usually never good. Set it for 1 hour intervals. You have 5 programs, so start at midnight. You should have your computer ready by 6am.

The main thing you need is common sense, that will stop about 90% of your computer problems. The programs are for the rest.

Although, I would add MalwareBytes anti-malware to that list. Its recieved pretty high ovations in the past. I'll add a more detailed explanation when I get done testing it.

Why would you spend $3200 on a computer?

I was planning on spending that much or more on my gaming rig...All together, my computer set should cost me about 10 grand, but this is for a gaming computer (solely gaming), a desktop for normal use, a test server (which will probably be my junker desktop), a few monitors, sound system, etc...Cant remember if I planned for another laptop in there or not, but I doubt it.

Depends on what he bought too. Could have been a high-end machine, or a prebuilt from alienware or something. Depends on what all he has in there. I've seen monitors that cost $500. Maybe he's going for video work and needed some higher-end stuff in there?

- I dont need to "get a life." I'm a gamer - I have LOTS of lives!

I decided to go for the high-end graphics card, processor, extra storage, and 3 gigs of ram. I tried 4, but either my OS or my motherboard wouldnt register the fourth. I've been told that that is common, but IDK. I decided to go for the best of the best at the time I built comp because I didn't want to have to change out parts a year later to keep up with games and such. I also paid another $200, on top of normal cost, to get a PSU that currently powers comp and 360, with a 5 min built in supply if power goes out.

Also found out to never buy a beta tested motherboard.
