Saxophone help (Need advice from a soprano player)

Alright, so i've played Alto sax for about 6 years and Tenor for 1, and this year i'm planning on learning Soprano for concert season. I have a few questions though.

 

 

 

1. Is soprano really the hardest sax to learn, and are there any problems i may encounter with learning it?

 

 

 

2. Would a straight or curved neck be better?

 

 

 

3. What is a good brand to start with (under $600, however I refuse to get a student model)

I play sax for about 6 years and have played all of them and by far the hardest is Bari. I don't know much about specs or pricing on Sopranos though, sorry. I just used my school's when I played :|

I don't think soprano is the hardest, it's probably bari (which is also the best sax ever!!!) but you shouldn't really have any problems switching unless you transpose a lot. The mouthpiece is a different size than alto and tenors... so after you get used to that it should be fine.

 

 

 

But ask your school if they have one you can use. That's what I did when I played the bari last year.

I asked my band director, we don't have any Sopranos :(. So, anyone know a good brand that isnt too expensive?

I would go with Yamaha for the heck of it. They're not the worst and not the best brand but they're a pretty good deal. If you want a new one though, you probably won't get one for less than about $1000... My alto was slightly used and cost like $1100... I would look online and in the ads of your local newspaper if you want a cheap one. Also try a music shop near you, they might have used ones for sale, or ask your band director if they know anyone selling one.
