Mouse pointer freezes up.

jaklumen

Recommended Posts

Running 1.7 Ghz CPU, 512 MB RAM, Windows XP.

NVIDIA GeForce2 MX video card.

Mouse pointer keeps freezing up when I play RS, more especially if I'm surfing at the same time.

I think I need to upgrade my video card but I'm not sure.

I play RS a bit on a system with similar stats to that (except 1.4, not 1.7GHz)

No probs -

What browser are you using to play?

Have you fully updated windows? (windowsupdate.com)

Any other strange problems with your mouse ever? or is it just the regular boring old microsoft mouse?

i'll look at the HJT log later when ive had some sleep, but after talking to jaklumen in IRC, it really seems to me that the problem stems from him loading so many processes from the boot (41 i think). I think it needs to be trimmed down quite a bit to fit the amount of RAM he has.

Anyone have any other ideas that my tired eyes didnt see?

/me kicks Norton for being such a memory hog...

Its not a bad log but without seeing how much memory each process takes up I cant really advise you on what to lose and keep etc.

The Office toolbar is a bit of a hog

so remove C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\1033\msoffice[Caution: ExecutableFile] and O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9[Caution: ExecutableFile].

The Parental Filter probasbly takes up load sof memory too.

Topic like this posted here. You might get some info about it there dunno never happened to me so I don't know how to fix.

I think you misunderstand. This problem is only happening to him when he is running RS. RS is a huge memory hog and if you have tons of other junk running at the same time, your just asking for trouble.

Jaklumen, my advise to you is to look at each of the processes that run from the boot, and decide if it is something you need all the time (obviously firewall and active spyware and virus protection are needed). if its any of the other junk, you most likely dont need it running at all times.

For a list of programs that load on boot go to:

Start > Run... > type regedit > click ok > HKey_Local_Machine > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Run

and

Start > Run... > type regedit > click ok > HKey_Current_User > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Run

Be sure about what you are deleting from these locations, but as a general rule, the only things that I load on boot with my systems is FW/AV/Spyware and Trillian. Anything else is not really needed.

Also using Cntrl+Alt+Del and clicking the processes tab gives you a list of processes that are currently running on your box. Once again, be sure of what you are looking at and deleting (Google helps a lot), but once you have identified what each process is, you can use this tool to kill some proccesses that are not needed at the time. I use it often to free up memory on big tasks.

I hope this helps.

Cross-checked regedit with msconfig.

I'm running the latest build of MS JVM and this seems to help a *lot*.

I'm not sure if I will go with your idea of using bsafe yet, Binyam, but do you (or anyone else) know how the memory use is for AVG? I'm thinking of maybe using this instead because I know everyone agrees that NAV is a memory hog.

EDIT: I think I'll disable System Doctor from startup, I think I remember that's a bit of a resource hog too.

Well, I'm not running RS and it froze up.

Giving NOD32 a test run to see how it fares vs. Norton. Got some infected files (spyware and I think a trojan) so other problems are afoot.
