For some reason when playing RuneScape my laptop starts to heat up and makes quite a loud buzzing noise. It seems to "calm down" so to speak every so often when I close the client/web browser I play in and re-open it. Just curious why it makes this buzzing noise while running RS and heats up.

It happens to mine too, and I can think of several reason that it happens.

 

 

 

The CPU is processing more maybe because you are playing the game in full screen HD mode, when CPU start to heat up, the built in CPU fan will spin faster to cool down the heat.

 

 

 

The GPU (your video card) is working more, so again, built in fan is spinning faster to reduce the heat off the GPU, generally happen to me during 3D gaming time.

 

 

 

For some odd reason, running RS in HD and normal mode tend to tax the computer abit, but I guess its harder to notice in PC since they have more space and less responsive cooling fans.

 

 

 

What you can do is air dust out the vents and stuff on your laptop, and maybe getting some sort of laptop fan platform to reduce the heat abit. Those work well, and do cool down some quite considerably. Laptops are compact in size, so they tend to heat up alot quicker. If the fan becomes more like a rukus, then you might want to check if something is loose, then it can get abit complicated (open up and check around, which I dont recommend unless you know some computer tech to do it)

When running RuneScape, your processor and GPU are taxed rather severely. You wouldn't think so, but since it's a Java game, it'll be taxed up pretty hard. When that happens, both processor and GPU heat up substantially, and due to the laptop's small form-factor, it can get pretty hot.

 

 

 

The best advice was already given; get some compressed air and blow whatever dust is in there, then get a cooling pad to keep it nice and chill.

When I used to play HD on my brother's laptop it used to heat up a lot too, speedfan often gave me temperatures of 70-80C. I believe the problem was that it had integrated graphics (Intel GMA 945G 225MB iirc), and that combined with it being a laptop makes it get to higher temperatures. The only viable solution was either to turn all settings off and play with the small screen, or just play on SD. (Before anyone asks, the laptop still works fine :P)

 

 

 

Anyway, if your fan is making a lot of noise, you may want to open it up and blow away the dust with compressed air/a grounded vacuum. I suspect Clare or someone will post with more details, I've only ever done it once so I don't know a great deal about it.

What has probably happened is that dust has collected on the outlet, if it's extremely bad compressed air won't solve the problem as generally the dust builds up forming a little carpet which blocks the vent on the heat sink.

The only way to remove the carpet of dust would be to open the laptop and remove the dust yourself, but if you're not feeling compitent then I would get a professional to do this for you as you could quite easily damage your laptop if you're not experienced. With some laptops you may be lucky as they have a trap door underneath giving you access to the fan and heat sink, but some you may have to remove the keyboard or even dismantle it completely.

 

 

 

As stated in earlier posts, you could try a vacuum cleaner or compressed air but from experience this will only clear out the dust if it's a small amount. If it's clogged up, it won't help much.

My laptop gets hot all the time when I play rs, especially on fullscreen, but it has yet to overheat. I wouldn't worry about it.
