If it's anything like a basilisk(which I once accidentally attacked with a 2h weapon), not even that would help. You simply can't kill cockatrices or basilisks without a mirror shield, your stats quickly drop (mine dropped to low 20's from high 60's before I got away, but it would probably keep going from there) and you get hit hard and fast.
