Spiders are too strong for his Defence level, he'd need to keep going back for food too often to get any proper trainning done.

 

Take Nicrune's advice and go with Flesh Crawlers. If you find them to be hitting too often (most likely you won't though) stick to Varrock Guards until you have 60+ Defence.

You could also try moss giants on crandor, they will rarely hit through full rune.

They hit surprisingly often when wearing full rune, I remember when I was trainning for 70 Def and I still had to take some food with me.
