December 6, 200817 yr A clipping mask is just like a normal mask, except that it is it's own layer tied to one bellow it. Any brush or picture that goes on the clipping mask layer will only appear on the layer below it, and nothing else. So if you wanted (for example) to add texture to an interesting 3D render (but not get the texture on the background) you would use a clipping mask and go from there. HERE is an apparent clipping mask tutorial. I have no idea how good it is as I don't use GIMP. Also this extra post was completely un-needed. Should have just bumped up your old one. :?
