[bleep]ing hell, did you just put any random glowing brush, lens flare or special effect into this? It's a mess, with no flow, no focal point... just a mess. I really can not say anything else about it, it reeks of non-effort.

Learn the basics pat, you need to.

Or nadril stay out of my topics, I know the {cabbage} basics. The focal is obviously the crow/text. There is not lens flare or special effects. Why don't YOU learn how to find effects. Wow I have a perfect Idea.

Hey guys

I've been wanting to create a blog of my day to day progress for ages, but didn't want to post anything till i actually had some screenshots to put in it. So over the last couple of monthes i've collected some various level ups etc.... and in the next week or so i plan to draft my blog out so i have everything.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could make me a banner to put at the very top of my blog, which i will centre.

Specifications:

Must say: "Kingjoe's Blog"

Be around the size of: "150 x 700 pixels"

I would like the banner to be predominantly text, with a background that includes no reference to runescape but instead a cool mix of abstract lines (colour scheme preferably!)

I'm bad at explaining things, but if possible could the banner have a King's crown hanging off the last letter?

I really like the examples and the shapes - is there any way of making the colour scheme a little more "less mad"?

I just find all the colours a little too wacky for my liking hehe

I've seen images on planet renders just when i type in "abstract" and they all just seem so call so i cant choose

Bah my gallery lingo fails me again! - What's BG? - I looked in the sticky on the gallery forum but couldn't see...

I really like the very top one, but i'd prefer the colours to 'match' a bit better if you know what i mean? - I have no idea how hard it is to change the colours on photoshop :? - sorry if i'm being awkward!!

Sorry Pat, but you don't know the basics. You don't know the basics of Focal points, balance, color theory, typography and so on. All you did was slap on a bunch of awesome brushes you took onto a canvas and then slapped on some text and a picture of a crown you, surprise, also took. So not only is none of this really your "own work" but it's poorly done as well.

You've been an [wagon] in numerous topics Pat because you somehow think you have this superiority over some other artists. At least they know some of the basics. They have a decent eye for a focal point, for leading to a focal point and they can kind of tell when their signature or piece of art is off balanced. You don't need to throw a hissy fit because someone told you something that was correct, instead of mindlessly praising it or giving you some half assed CC which won't even matter or you will just shrug off.

Take, for example, yaff's comment. You just shrugged it off because, no doubt, you and your "customer" (an average runescape player) certainly know best in this situation.

So I reiterate, learn the basics pat. Look online and read up about Design theory, about color theory. You can know all the coolest tricks you want in GIMP or whatever you use, but if you don't know the basics of Graphic Design or Art than you will get no where with your image or trying to convey what you want in a logical fashion.

Listen to Nadril, he knows what he's talking about. You'd be wise to take his advice.

I laughed at the title (before it was removed..).

Pat... I'll have to be honest with you here. It really isn't that good... I think it would've been better if you have made the guy pick a render.

However... it isn't absolutely horrible. I can see what you tried to do and all...

Text focal points are awfully hard to do. Remember that, in a text-only sig, you can't simply pile the text on top of a background. You have to integrate it into the sig somehow. The text, especially in a text-only sig, is as much an art as the sig itself. Rules like composition, arrangement, and color vs. contrast still apply.

Furthermore, you have too much stuff going on in your background... one squiggly would've been enough I think.

Also... do remember that all of us at the Gallery, even Nadril, are only trying to help you.

Exactly.... I would normally make someone pick but he didn't want one...

How is that targeting maybe it was a joke? Maybe I just don't get any of nadril's comments as "Constuctive". Everyone has there own opinions I wish this was US then I could just say "Right of speech" and put it back up... and nadril I didn't "shrug" it off I took it in. and I don't see anyone saying you posts are targeting, you post in all my topics and not everyone elses. You could just stay out of my "CRAPPY ART NON-BASICS" Topics.... thank you for making my day worse than it already was...

Wow why don't i just write who's c/c actually helps...

Pat, I only give as much effort into C/C as the user puts into what they are doing. If you don't make an effort to learn I won't make an effort to help.

And as I said before, you are an [wagon] in other people's topics when it comes to criticism.

And anyways I told you what to do to be better. This piece is un-salvageable, no minor or major change is going to help it. That is why I said to start with the basics of art, because no matter how abstract something is you aren't going to get anywhere without them. Sure, people could help you and tell you where to place all of these pixels, but then what? The piece is no longer your creation but the creation of the Gallery. I want you to learn the basics, not as an insult (A lot of users, even experienced users in this regard, could deal to learn more of art theory. Hell, I went on for 7 years before honestly and truly learning the theory behind design and art. I'd like to think that if I had learned it earlier I could have avoided a lot of mistakes I made over those years) but as an honest to god piece of help, because I want everyone in the Gallery to get better. However, I want them to think for themselves. I don't want to say "move X there, move Y there, make it Z color and H height W width" I want you, as an artist, to figure out for yourself what is best.

And yes, my post was harsh. I fully intend it to be harsh because I really don't like you or how you treat others in the Gallery. That doesn't change any of my criticism at all though.

So enough with the long posts by me, as by this point you've already tuned me out and went back to doing your own thing.

Anyone can give constructive criticism. If you're not going to listen to it and learn from it, there's no point giving it.

Nadril is right, you do clearly need to learn the basics of good design. Slapping some brushes on and adding a ripple filter doesn't look good. Look at it anyway, on the smudged one, the lines are jagged from all the distortion.

Your text in the banner is also bad. It's just been placed, there is no shading, interaction with the background, kerning, aligning, positioning etc.

Whoah guys let's take it down a notch, shall we? No it's not the best thing in the world, but there's more to constructive criticism than just criticizing. Saying "learn the basics" doesn't help him with this banner right now. Yes it's decent advice and will probably help him with his graphics in general, but it doesn't say anything about the banner he's working on.

All of the following is directed at your "Change text color & Final" version:

The main thing I would do is fix the font. Right now it doesn't stand out from the background at all. I'm not suggesting that you change the colour to an obscenely bright neon colour, but it does have to have a little pop. For my blog banners, I usually like to apply some layer styles to my text to help it stand out better. Things like: bevel/emboss, drop shadow and/or outer glows. These may not be the best banners in the world, but they will help show you what I mean:

I try to pick text colours that stand out from the background, but at the same time don't look completely out of place (i.e. bright neon green text on a signature that's all dark red = ew).

..which brings me to my next point: colour. Right now, your final image consists of a black and white background, blue text and a salmon (can't believe I just used that word as a colour) crown. There doesn't seem to be anything in common. I would pick a colour theme, stick with it, and add some of that colour (subtly) into the background. I wouldn't make it too bright, but just give it a little bit of life. Then I would change the text colour to better support that colour theme, but not blend in TOO much. Because since this is a blog banner and not a signature, you want the text to be clearly noticeable.
