CoRnMaN
hey, i was wondering if its possible to be running off a hard drive, then switch over to other hard drive? of course information on the different hard drives wouldnt be should, dif registrys, dif programs/files, and i dont think im tlaking about partitions becuase if i am correct u cant add/change files to partitions? and if it is possble just to switch over hard drives at startup (setup in bios) like switch the boot priotitys? that would be just wodnerfull  . and i mean switching over hard drives WITHOUT taking a hard drive out and putting a hard drive in. back to partitions. if it is possble to have 2 different partitions with 2 different operating systems that would be nice, becuase one system i might want my space on. REASON. if one hard drive/system fails the other is perfectly fine (nothing to do with backup).
battletrax
You can do that pretty easily, but I don't think that's a good solution for safeguarding against drive failure. Also, partitioning a drive is taking one harddrive and splitting it up into pieces so that your computer sees it as multiple harddrives. If you want to have a backup copy of your data, you can always try a raid array.... I'm not sure what you're trying ot do exactly though... crucifyed4us
If you're just wanting to have your own space on your current hard drive then yes you can make you own partition. As I have never been interested in doing this I can't tell you how, but I know you can. I don't quite understand if you're saying: a.) You have 1 OS Installed and it has all system files on 2 hard drives? or b.) You have 2 different HardDrives with 2 completely different installs of Windows (or other OS) Anyway if it's option A. I have no idea. If it's option B then you can dual-boot, again, I have never taken time to do this so I can't give you specific instrutions, but it is possible. battletrax
Dual booting should do what you want assuming I understand you correctly. With dual booting, you have 2 OSes on 2 different harddrives or partitions. So, when you turn on your computer, you pick your particular OS and you kind of have your own copy of the computer. First, how many harddrives do you have, and how many copies of windows? I'm not that familiar with the windows licencing stuff but I think you'll need 2 copies of windows to dual boot. If this sounds good, we can guide you through the process, and I'm sure there's a good tutorial out there.
crucifyed4us
Why don't you just get a hard drive and put your games on there. That's easy to do, easier than dual booting too. Dual-booting is usually for people who want to use a different OS, such as linux, without having to remove windows.

Greatsilverwyrm
What is it exactly that you're trying to do? Why do you want to dual boot? I guess I'm not understanding that..
crucifyed4us
if you get a seperate harddrive for your games then you can install all the games onto it, and convince your dad that they will not interact with his files at all.

Greatsilverwyrm
Aah, I get you now.. So you want to be able to have the same computer, but instead of having a seperate account you want an entirely seperate HDD? I'm very sure that's possible, but I've never done it, so, I can't tell you exactly how to do it.. Basically, though, you would install windows on both HDDs and then put in a boot selector (? I think that's what it's called) that, when you started the computer, would let you choose which OS to boot into.
Bmw
I think I get what you're saying. You want freedom to do whatever you want, which is why you are getting your own harddrive? Well yeah, I've done that quite often on other computers, and its more or less straightforward. Just hook up the second hard drive in your case, and format it, get it going, etc. After that, you have 2 working harddrives. I believe at startup you will be given the initial option of which HD you want to enter. Just pick yours, and there ya go. You can change it also, to boot into one by default, by right clicking my computer>advanced>startup and recovery settings. If for some reason you don't get the initial option on which OS to boot into, you can always go into your bios and change the default boot ups in there. Annoying thing is that you'll have to hit Delete (or F11 for some) to choose which HD you want to boot up into. But yeah, to answer your question, its possible, and is frequently done by many.
