Are you still working on smithing right now, or taking a break to keep yourself from going mental? If you're still doing smithing, one of the things I often do is buy coal and iron, make it all into bars, sell enough bars to cover the cost of the ores I bought, then smith the remaining bars. Faster than just smelting, and while you don't gain any cash, you don't really lose much either.
