3d-Landscapes [Image intensive]

Made using Terragen. I know Nadril used to be quite good with it so c/c from him, anyone really, would be choice. I have made 3 decent things in it, my second, third and fourth things ever in it. I really would like help regarding textures, and how to make them.

All the post-processing was done in the Gimp.

Terragen is a nice little program, not especially hard to use.

Hard to explain, but search terragen tut, in google, and I found a tut for it. Any c/c pat?

I found it right after I posted #-o

Uh sure... I assume you are going for realism so....

On the first one the cliff on the left is too sharp also, I don't like how many/heavy the ripples are.

Second one is great, except for that yet again there are really pointed parts.

Third one, points are better and well, overall its the best of the three...

Nice, some of those look real but the jaggedy edges kind throws off the realism a bit.

I don't know what you can do in terms of technicality but they look quite empty and a tad bit boring.

In number three there's a point in the cliff where it's more clear than the other misty parts, my eyes keep wandering there. >.<

Pat you need to work on your surface maps, atmosphere well... everything. When I used terragen I used World Machine to make the procedural terrains. As far as surface maps go remember the parrent > Child relationships.

Parent > Child Relationships:

Parent layers are the "base" layers you can create. Think of it like a base patch of dirt, for example. The Child layers, then, are sub-directories of the parent texture. So for example you could have a Grass child layer. The grass would only show up where the dirt showed up and no where else.

The reason this is so important is that eventually you will do something like this:

BASE (usually rock)

>PARENT #1 (Dirt, for example)

__> CHILD#1 of PARENT #1 (Dirt, another slightly lighter/darker color)

__> CHILD#2 of PARENT #2 (Another dirt layer, different color)

>PARENT #2 (grass, for example. You want to control this so it doesn't show on a certain slope)

__>CHILD#1 of PARENT #2 (Another shade of grass, maybe a light green.)

__>CHILD#2 of PARENT #2 (Perhaps a darker shade of grass)

>PARENT #3 (Rock texture for the side of mountains. You can control this so it shows everywhere, or perhaps just on a certain slope)

__> CHILD#1 of PARENT #3 (continuation of the rock on the side of the mountains. Perhaps a nice "Strata" [look it up])

That would be an example of a very, very basic surface map. I find that using stock photos of textures such as grass, dirt, ect. is very useful to maintain realism.

Atmospheres I don't have enough time to go on, but there are tons of great tutorials out there.

Finally, some examples of landscapes that are possible through terragen (My landscapes)

All examples with minimal post processing through photoshop (mostly a sharpen filter, curves, ect.)

Sorry I can't explain everything. I haven't used terragen in years regularly but I don't think anything has changed since then. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Copy-pasta from pats thread. You both have the same problems.

So Terragen is the next best thing here eh? Looks quite cool, I'll give it a shot.

And I can't really give any C/C here, seeing as I don't, "Specialize", in this field.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

I don't specialise in this field of art, but after some analysing I figured I could try give you some help. It seems you have the background covered. The sky and clouds look alright and are definitley better than the foreground. The mountains are pretty horrendous. The texture and colours are pretty awful IMO.

Pretty good, mate. Really liking this one apart from a few jagged and pointed bits on the mountains and some of the texture not looking quite as good as it could. I'd say it's your best if not one of your best =D>

[hide=#2]Rocksagain.png[/hide]

What's going on there? Why does it repeat itself at the bottom? Is that an attempt at reflection in the water?

I like this one. But yet again the texture and colours of the mountains don't look too good. Most of your mountains look like they have had some ridiculous filter applied to them IMO :(

Pretty much the same except I'm not liking the clouds either. They look sharp on the edges and don't blend in properly. The water doesn't look nice either and the right side looks really bright especially the water.

Keep trying, I guess. You look like you have some decent potential and there are obviously a few people around here who know a thing or two about this so maybe you could ask them :D
