How are stats used within Runescape?

Featured Replies

I would really like to know how the skill stats are used within Runescape calculations. For instance, I can imagine that my Attack level has an effect on how likely I am to hit in a given melee round. This likelihood is affected by my melee weapon's offensive stats, correct? Now how does my Combat Level figure in? Does my Defense skill level ONLY come into play when an enemy is using a melee attack? Or does my higher Defense skill level increase my chance of avoiding range and magic damage? If so, then Def is by far the most useful combat skill.

Please clue me in here.

Thanks

It does increase you chance of avoiding range and mage. But so does protection prayers.

Defence deals with melee for sure, and I think Ranged, but Magic deals with magic attacks.

Your combat level, in some formula, gets all your combat skills (Attack, Strength, Defence, HP, Magic, Ranged, Prayer and Summoning) and makes one number, your combat level.

Melee and range attacks you defence with defence.

Magic attacks you defence with both magic and defence

Combat level does not literally affect anything in combat, it is just a visual representation of your combat skill levels, thus the reason for pures: keeping your combat level low but still being able to dish out large amounts of damage.

Attack only has to do with how often you hit for damage, not how often you hit high or anything.

Defence is (I believe?) how often someone hits a 0 on you when using melee or ranged. and it is also a percentage of how often magic hits on you.

Your own magic level is the larger percentage of how often someone hits you with magic.

I believe most of this is right at least..

Higher attack level means you have a higher percent chance you will hit compared to someone a level lower then you. Then there this a random number generator that rolls and chooses a number from 1-max hit (assuming your attack hit). Defense help block all 3 forms of combat. Though for some reason your magic level also affects your defense against magic attacks.

I'm getting the impression form your posts that

Attack - used in melee calculations only

Strength - used in melee calculations only

Defense - used in melee, ranged and calculations magic

Ranged - used in ranged calculations only

Magic - used in magic calculations only

Combat Level - not used in any calculations (only used as a number to display)

Am I understanding correctly? It's not hard then to figure out which Skill is the most valuable to raise. ;) Yet dispite this logic, most players choose to keep Defense lower than Strength and Attack. Go figure!

Your defense level has no effect as far as magic is concerned. It only affects melee and ranged.

Defense does affect magic, just not very much..

In my opinion, Defense is not as good as it may appear theoretically because it does not affect how high you get hit, just how often. Also, magic level is most of magic defense so yeah..

In addition to this, defense raises combat the most (I believe). and low combat levels are wanted for PvP in general, other than defense pures which are rare and range tanks which are not.

Your Attack level determines how often you will hit. This can be improved by wearing items with Attack bonuses.

Your Strength level determines your max hit. Again, improved by Strength bonuses.

Your Defence level determines how often you get hit a "0". Different types of Defence bonuses block against different types of combat.

(E.G. Magic defence helps block magic attacks more often.)

Hope this helps.

Actually, (based on my observations) you combat level GENERALLY goes up every three attack or strength levels, and every four defence or hitpoints levels (not counting any other combat stat).
