Mars is closer to Earth than it will be for many many years

Featured Replies

Anyone with a telescope might want to check it out, its the brightest object in the sky after Venus sets, and is easily distiguished by its reddish color. If anyone gets a chance to look at it with a telescope, tell me how it looks because I don't have a telescope and I'd really like to know. I think some telescopes can take pictures, and it would be great if someone could post one if they have it. The time it is visible varies depending on location, but I know its above the horizon by about 30 degrees on the East coast the US around midnight. No one alive today will ever see mars this bright again, so don't miss out on this literally once in a lifetime opportunity. (I would also appreciate it if everyone kept their comments about me being a nerd to themselves)

Actually Mars comes this close to Earth ever few years and isnt as close to earth as it as the last time (2003) by several thousand miles. :P

its actually 13 million miles farther away now than it was in 2003, but it will still be easily distuingishable, and its going to get brighter over the next few months, not days, peaking around 30th October at a magnitude of -2.3, making .3 of a degree brighter than jupiter.

wish i had a telescope, that would be so awesome. oh well, too expensive :) . my astronomy calender doesnt say anything about mars being really close, and that is something it would say. for today it says it is the best time this summer to see the milky way, for the next ten days. nothing else too interesting coming up this week either.
