fakeeoghan
I was just reading a topic on this page about adding ram and it seemed really easy. Is it as easy to add more ram to a laptop?
fullup
It's not quite as simple as adding additonal memory to a desktop PC, but it's not difficult. There is a nice guide at http://www.crucial.com/install/sodimm.asp which is worth reading, and while you are at their site run their System Scanner to see what your upgrade options are. fakeeoghan
Thanks Fullup. I found out that I only have 128mb ram. I have 2 slots to put ram into and my laptop can handle a max of 1GB. I found a site selling ram and was wondering whether I should buy two 512mb chips or just 1. If I buy just 1, can I still use my 128mb with it to give me 640mb? Does it matter that they are different brands or anything. Heres what I'm thinking of buying at the moment. http://www.computer-memory-store.com/mi ... odimm.html http://www.computer-memory-store.com/sa ... odimm.html Are either of them better or are they the same? Am I being ripped off? Thanks for any help anyone can give me. ~Cill Dara EDIT: I am living in Austria but have only a little german. (In case you know any better sites to get the ram from) From the above site I will have to pay a total of $165 american, for just 1 chip, including delivery. Pyro
Are you sure your laptop really uses that type of memory?
fakeeoghan
Well I have an IBM Thinkpad A30 (type 2652), as I found out today. The site where I'm buying the ram whatsits from says that those two products work in my laptop. When you are at the home page their is a list of brands at the right hand side. I chose IBM, Thinkpad, etc. and it came up with those 2 products.
fakeeoghan
So does it matter which one I get or are they both the same?
Necromagus
The sticks have to be the same type, but the memory size doesn't matter. For example, my computer uses two sticks of PC3200 400Mhz ram, one 512mb and one 256mb, for a total of 768mb. xyrec
I don't think they have to be the same type(although I wouldn't ever do it in any computer of mine), just if you use two different speeds it'll run at the speed of the slower one. I may be wrong on this, someone correct me if I am. According to IBM's website that's the right type of ram and amount. However the price is massively inflated. I found this one at tigerdirect.com for 92bucks and some change. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... pNo=379706 It's PNY brand which I've never used so I can't speak for the quality of their products. Kingston(which is the brand in my pc) has several prices from sites that sell their products that range from 140-193. http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configu ... -TP133/512 This one is 104 dollars, but it doesn't mention the number of pins, it just says it's guarunteed to work on your laptop. http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fus ... y_id=75954 IBM was over 250 per 512mb so I didn't even bother to post their link. I can't find the right ram on circuit city....it's sad, some of the older ram is more expensive nowadays than the new stuff. You can get ddr ram most of the time for cheaper than pc133 or pc100....a friend of mine was trying to find ram for a computer that only took pc66...ick. fakeeoghan
I know this is an old topic but I just wanna warn people that the computer-memory-store that I mentioned seems to be a bit dodgy. I ordered new RAM from there andit was never delivered and when I try to email them I get a message after a few hours saying that it could not be delivered. They do not provide any way of contacting them other than by the email addresses that I have tryed. Seems I've been ripped off for about 150euro :(
