I think I heard it on an NCIS episode awhile back, don't remember when though. Gibbs was demonstrating how the Marines are trained to break the neck of an enemy sentry.

 

In another episode they talked about how they do it with a knife. You stab straight in I guess about mid neck, then push forward, severing the windpipe, and pretty well putting them in a bad way.
