For the weapons thing, all depends on your body size, I think.

 

For a sword you need to be taller and more nimble.

For an axe it's more of a brute strength thing.

 

Or so I think.

A dwarf couldn't carry around a full sized sword. So compact, yet heavy weapons make more sense.
