The only monogamous species I can think of off hand (though I'm sure there are more) is that way because they have to be. The Emperor penguin has to be monogamous because the male has to hold and incubate the egg while the mother feeds. This would be next to, if not impossible if one male had to hold 2 or more eggs.

I have a feeling polyandry(sp?) evolved due to sex-based abortions or killings. In some cultures they want boys, so they kill their baby girls. Which after a while of everyone doing it, would leave you with a need for wimmin.
