Religion is not opposed to progress by nature, rather by interpretation. Catholicism has the largest following on Earth, and it seems to me that it promotes more old-fashioned styles of thinking. It might not help that the Popes are usually elderly, they will likely be a few decades behind the times on their own, and encouraged to continue in the path of their predecessors. The three Abrahamic religions are mired down in history, going on morals and interpretation of teachings hundreds of years old. I myself am Christian, mostly because of my family and the fact that I know next to nothing of other religions. As science progresses we can answer questions previously answered by religion, thus paring down it's usefulness. i think the whole concept that religion is "The ultimate source/cause of morality" is pure hogwash. And what the hell would we do, should we discover what really created the universe? The universe exists. Morality and thought exist. All I do is thank someone for it, and have a chat with them when I'm feeling down. Belief in a greater, benevolent force and consciousness after death just makes living so much easier and more pleasant for those who don't overreact. I'm all for science and progress, but there will always be things essential to most of humanity as we know it that either can't or shouldn't be supplied by calculation.
