[hide=Could you record yourself reading this?]People’s obsession with immortality goes back as far as recorded history. The oldest surviving story is the Epic of Gilgamesh, according to Alexander Heidel in his book, The Gilgamesh Epic and Old Testament Parallels. The epic is the tale of King Gilgamesh, who goes on a quest for immortality after his friend is killed. However, when Gilgamesh finds the invincible hero he searches for, he learns that immortality is impossible, and that he may only attain perpetual life by having great actions. In some respects, Gilgamesh’s goal was achieved; his story is still influential nearly 4000 years later. Well, at least in a high school speech, if not anywhere else. However, even this Babylonian bedtime story didn’t quench our thirst for immortality. In ancient Greece and Rome, a mythical Fountain of Youth existed, but only in the afterlife. The story of the spring originates from India, according to Compton's by Brittanica. Merchants and travelers brought the story to Europe in the seventh century, who in turn brought it to America. In the 17th century, according to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, Juan Ponce de Leon came to the new world, searching for the fountain, which he believed to be in a place the Indians called Bimini. Leon never found the fountain, but he did start colonies in Florida and the Bamahas. These stories show just how obsessed mankind is with immortality.[/hide]

Now that is just stupid.

it's understandable, as i can see how you'd need to believe in something to be able to justify killing innocent people..

How does that justify anything?

Saying that its correct to kill people because I believe in some imaginary friend is pants on head [developmentally delayed]ed.

Um well. Thats interesting.

I wont have much free time, for a while, to record myself reading this. Sorry. But what is it for? History? I know a few of my friends in "Western Civ." had to read Gilgamesh, along with writing an essay about it. Im assuming you're doing the same?

Hmm interesting.

Well, I'll see what I can do. These walls are paper thin. So I much rather do it when people are dead asleep.

I don't understand what this has to do with anything, they won't keep you out of the military for not being religious...

Also when is it that we're supposed to be killing innocent people?

I don't have to believe in a God to justify killing someone. I believe in a good, and I believe that in killing some people we move closer to said good.

Well, they apparently move you to "Spiritual Rehab" ,or something, if you fail a survey or test, from what I remember in the article.

"If you "fail" this test, as Griffith did, you may be subject to Spiritual Remediation Training. The Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers has more details on that training and its pervasively religious content."

This may be a rather "douchey" way to look at religion. But I have a firm belief that we would be so farther than were we are today, more over on a technological stand point, if we didn't have religion holding us back.

I would totally wish religion never existed, except we really don't know how it would affect history. Could have been better or worse.

However, I would totally be all for everyone giving up religion right now, though that won't happen.

Religion had/has its uses, but I agree that religion has continually gotten in the way of progress.
