New Hampshire Legalises Gay Marriage

I'm happy people are getting what they need to live their way in life, that doesn't harm other people in a serious way - even if this is just in America, in a few states though.

Too bad America has so many states unlike Canada, where it would be just 13. :P

We started with 13, we just kept owning the other guys so much we had to make 50.

More like we raped and slaughtered Native Americans and Mexicans..

I can run a a five minute mile while you're trailing behind me by at least two minutes. You can run, can't you?

Not sure if this is directed at me or not. If it is, yes, I can run. But you are quite clearly superior in this field. Our running abilities are not the same, even though we both have the ability to run. The abilities both exist, but they are on different levels.

So are you really that different?
hopesolopatriot.jpg

Is that a trick question? :-s Yes, we are different because we do not run at the same exact speed.

Now I got a question for you. Should murder and vandalism deserve the same punishment? They are both illegal. Since they are both illegal does this make them the same, and therefore should be treated the same?

No, it's not. I never stated that humans can't be considered superior. Should they deserve the same punishment? No, of course not. But they're both crimes. Are they that different?

I'm not implying that there is a right answer, it's only to get you to think about how different or similar we are.

I may have forgotten, but I believe that chickens share 95% of their DNA with humans.

If that's what you're arguing then that's nothing but subjectivity. Definitions of what "a lot" is are going to vary from person to person. And yes, I still feel that we are very different from all of the other animals.

This is mainly a misunderstanding though. I thought you were defending the notion that humans are not more superior than animals or that our abilities are no different.

Well, I agree with you there. In terms of DNA makeup, we are very similar to animals. Especially when you look at the big picture and take into account all of the matter that is in the universe that has almost nothing in common with our DNA makeup. But in terms of our abilities, we're millions of years ahead of them (in a literal sense because of evolution).

And on some level I guess you can say that everything is the same because we're all made up of atoms

I may have forgotten, but I believe that chickens share 95% of their DNA with humans.

We share 50% with bananas according to my biology textbook

I quite agree with the person who you are quoting. May I ask you, Robert, what does set us apart?

Our ability to communicate on a level far superior to that of any other animal.

Our ability to create what we imagine. This is what makes us such great civilization-builders.

Our ability to use logic and reasoning to solve problems.

May I inquire how you know that we can communicate at a superior level to that of animals? Our ability to create what we imagine, hmm. Does that really set us apart? Animals can create what they can imagine given the tools the need. Sure they're not going to manipulate things to a degree that we can, but that's not a difference, only a variance in skill. Other creatures use logic all the time. Sometimes they make mistakes because of their ignorance. Are you implying that we do not?

In regards to my statement, I was not speaking in a literal sense. Of course we are "mapped" differently, if only by accident. But does that not give us a common ancestry: a series of accidents? You could point out many differences with simply five letters, A, U, T, C, and G.

Yeah, and homosexuality and heterosexuality are really no different, right...?

Differences and variances are the same thing. Humans>animals.

[English translation needed]

Humans are animals. get it right.

Exactly, Zierro. ;)

They are both sexualities. Are they that different? Are you implying that humans are not animals?

This doesn't even include what we (the colonists) did to British tax collectors (hanging them on "liberty poles"), not to mention what the Puritans did in Salem, Massachusetts during the 1600s. Don't forget that we [bleep]ed at Great Britain to give us Oregon Territory and plotted to expel the British once and for all by taking Canada (which didn't happen). Then there was the whole idea of Manifest Destiny ("God-sanctioned" right to build an empire or influence/manipulate the rest of the world) and the Monroe Doctrine, which stated that Europe didn't have the right to intervene in the Americas any longer. Of course, we also had the hatred toward Mexicans and the mass genocide of the natives. Then we had a nice guy as a senator during the 50s by the name of Joseph McCarthy, who loved to persecute... Okay, I'll stop. :P

Anyway, I agree. It's nice that a few states are realizing that it isn't going to be the end of the world by letting gay couples marry each other.

Without the earthworm, we would not be able to live. Without the ant, we would not survive. Without the bee, life would not exist. Better start fixing that attitude because it's the attitude that humans are somehow above nature that is currently destroying the world.

It's like the generic brand of store cereal and Fruit Loops. Both are cereal, but that doesn't make them the same; Fruit Loops is superior. Kind of a bad example because cereal superiority is subjective, but humans v [other] animals isn't really.

The attitude you are thinking of is indifference, not dominance. I am more superior than a baby but that doesn't mean that I don't care about a baby's health. It just simply means I am smarter, more fit, and more capable. That's all.

We can actually use our superiority to help nature. For example, humans try to preserve endangered species all the time. Other animals do not possess the observational skills that we have to even recognize a species is endangered - let alone actually preserving them.

We are animals, yes. I concede this.

However, we are superior in that we have built this earth (try not to take that literally), shaped it the way we wished to shape it, and made it our own. No other animal has succeeded in doing this, hence our superiority.

You're missing the point that we have to protect them because we're the ones who [bleep]ed with nature in the first place. All those endangered species we are protecting, are endangered due to us. That's why it's our responsibility to protect them.

Nemo vir est qui mundum non reddat meliorem..

How did this go from legalizing gay marriage to how humans are superior to other animals?

Good point.

You're missing the point that we have to protect them because we're the ones who [bleep] with nature in the first place. All those endangered species we are protecting, are endangered due to us. That's why it's our responsibility to protect them.

So we're responsible for dinosaurs being extinct? Extinction isn't some brand new thing that only exists because humans are here. I was making a point about how superiority isn't always a bad thing - you just chose to disregard it and bring something irrelevant up. If someone's missing a point here, it's definitely you.

Plus you're pretty much admitting that we're superior by saying that we are the species responsible for endangering other animals.

One more thing. We don't have to protect them - we choose to do so because we have morals and intelligence. If only one chicken was left on the planet and a hungry wolf saw it, do you honestly think he'd give a [cabbage]? No, humans are the only species that are superior enough to recognize an endangered species and to actually care about saving them.

^

I think humans were responsible for Dodos though...

You're right, humans did make dodos extinct. My mistake. I'll edit that part out. There are still many species that have become extinct before humans even got here though.

I was referring to the species we're protecting.. and I'm pretty sure we are not protecting any dinosaurs. Right now, go and look at the endangered specie list and come back with a decent amount of animals that we are protecting, and are going extinct not due to us.

It doesn't matter if it is our fault. We have the ability to protect them and we have the ability to make them extinct. This alone shows that we are superior and that being superior is not always a bad thing. That's all I was saying. Other animals cause other species to become extinct but you never see them try to help preserve them.
