michel555555
from http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8127145.stm Israeli forces have boarded a ship trying to carry aid and pro-Palestinian activists to the Gaza Strip in defiance of Israel's blockade of the territory. The 20 passengers include former US congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Nobel Prize winner Mairead Maguire. The activists also include some Britons, campaigners said. Ms McKinney described it as "an outrageous violation of international law", as the boat was on a humanitarian mission and was not in Israeli waters. The Israeli military said the boat was trying to enter Gaza illegally. The US-based Free Gaza Movement has breached the blockade five times since August 2008. Two other attempts by the activist group were stopped by Israeli warships during Israel's three-week military offensive in Gaza in December and January. Israel keeps a tight hold on Gaza, which is ruled by the militant Palestinian group Hamas. The Israeli military said the passengers and crew of the Greek-registered ship Arion would be handed over to immigration authorities in Ashdod, and its humanitarian aid cargo would be taken to Gaza by road after a security check. "An Israeli navy force intercepted, boarded and took control of the cargo boat Arion... as it was illegally attempting to enter the Gaza Strip," a military spokesman said. I'm wondering what TIF thinks about this. Will this act by israel finally bring more attention to the plight of gaza's citizens and will people actually do anything about it? And do you think that israel was justified in this especially since it was in international waters. [spoiler=click you know you wanna]Me behave? Seriously? Danqazmlp
Am i the only one who supports Israel in all of this? The strip is ruled by a party which from what i see is a Terrorist organisation, and almost all of Israels efforts have been to get them out of power. If the French started firing rockets over the channel at Britain, would we not be allowed to try and Crush the french and blockade their country? As i see it, that aid ship, as said in that article, was ilegally crossing the blockade, aid is in the country legally, but doing it illegally is asking for trouble. It even says they have tried to illegally pass the blockade many times before. I have no sympathy for them. Want to be my friend? obfuscator
As much as I sympathize with the plight of the people in the Gaza strip, Israel has allowed humanitarian aid to enter as long as it goes through the right channels, which this clearly hasn't. michel555555
from http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8127145.stm The Israeli military said the passengers and crew of the Greek-registered ship Arion would be handed over to immigration authorities in Ashdod, and its humanitarian aid cargo would be taken to Gaza by road after a security check. What's wrong? There's a reason why they are bringing aid to gaza behind israel's back. This is from about 5 mins of searching. I know these sites might not be so reliable so if anyone has a reliable site that actually covers this could you please post. http://www.electronicintifada.net/v2/article10613.shtml So desperate are Gazans that several tried to smuggle nuts and coffee into Gaza mixed into animal feed. Both items are banned by Israel http://www.gisha.org/index.php?intLanguage=2&intItemId=1529&intSiteSN=113 Among the food items banned from entering Gaza: Halva, tea, juice powder http://www.act-intl.org/news.php?uid=679 biscuits and tomato paste were on the most recent list of items banned by Israel edit- one from the guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jun/16/carter-hamas-gaza-israel Carter said he had asked Israeli officials to explain the blockade and why items like paper and crayons were banned from Gaza. "I sought an explanation for this policy in Israel, but did not receive a satisfactory answer because there is none," he said. [spoiler=click you know you wanna]Me behave? Seriously? 22pepsi22
I'd have to side with Israel on this as well. Send aid, sure, but don't disregard the regulations for doing it. You'd be causing trouble in a matter that really does not need more trouble. The fact that they did this themselves on several occasions makes me wonder if this is just a... ummm.... publicity stunt? Anywho, bad move.

Anywho, bad move. They haven't been letting much if any aid through for ages. The Gazans aren't even allowed to import cement to rebuild their homes that were destroying by Israel during the last conflict. Its yet another example of Israel applying collective punishment to the people of Gaza. These people now live in a miserable state of poverty which could easily be remedied. Instead Israel has seemingly chosen to punish them under the pretext of stopping Hamas smuggling munition (which hasn't happened). Not only is it morally wrong to punish civilians in this way (note they even stop The Red Cross from delivering aid) but it's counter-productive - it just alienates another generation of young people in Gaza, fuels their hatred of Israel and makes them susceptible to Hamas' propaganda. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 01409.html http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/wor ... 84862.html He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)

Considering the situation there would be nothing wrong with Israel holding some blockade/cargo control but a functional ban on imports is crossing the line.
