Hey,

Well some of you may know, I built myself a computer over the summer. It's been running smoothly more or less ever since, with regular antivirus scans, disk cleanups, chkdsks, spyware removal, etc. So its in tip top shape. Plus, I don't download messed up programs, or visit those odd sites lol. So no chance of viruses or spyware really.

I'm running:

Windows Xp Pro Sp2

2.06Ghz AMD 3000+ Processor

1024mb Cosair Ram

Now, onto the problem. Recently (past few days) I've been randomly getting BSOD's. Sometimes while using only Microsoft Word, sometimes on the internet, sometimes on MSN. Completely random. Also, sometimes I cannot access my system again, as it'll just restart upon boot, but if I'm lucky after several tries it'll work.

The error message on the BSOD is usually pfn_list_corrupt which then means I need to restart. After I restart, the next BSOD I recieve will be a win2k.sys error. Address BF8011C3 Base Bf800000 Datestamp 42211c2.

I have done a chkdsk, and repaired my computer by doing so. However, my problems still continue. Recently, I have installed NO new programs. I installed a new cpu fan about 2 weeks ago, but the BSOD has just popped up recently. The cpu temp usually stays around the 50c mark, mobo temp at 40c. It's a decent quality fan, 21dba, spire.

Ok, not really sure what the article is trying to say. I've ran verifier and updated whatever was unsigned. Still BSOD persists.

However, I've found something interesting....usually when I have an additional usb device plugged in, such as my iPod mini or my USB Flash Drive, i'll get the BSOD. But I think I've gotten it before when they weren't in, however, if I boot up with one of them plugged in, I'm likely to get the BSOD right away. If I unplug and boot up, its fine.

I've updated my iPod and USB drivers, still BSOD. All drivers on my computer are fully updated.

Well it's getting really annoying now. The problem seems to be getting worse, with me getting the BSOD quite frequently. I CANNOT boot up my system if my iPod or USB Flash Disk is plugged in. I'll get the BSOD right away. If I unplug it, it seems to run ok. However, I still get the BSOD without it being in.

I've also recieved the errors "Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal" and "Memory_Management".

I've ran memtest86, and recieved several errors in test 8. However, Athlon systems are known to fail this test and or test 5.

I really don't know what to do at this point. For the past two months the computer has run fine. There has been no change recently, no reason I can see for this problem starting. A reformat is no help, as this is a hardware issue, not software.

Any help is much appriciated.

Still requesting help.

I've disconnected all unneccessary hardware for now, and the BSOD still continues. So that rules out any problem with perpherials causing the problem. It is almost guaranteed a memory/driver problem, but I don't know how to fix it :cry:

My areas of the most expertice tend to be with networking and hardware so I'm just kinda thinking out loud here, but arn't BSOD's a fault with windows and thus a software issue, not a hardware issue? I'm not sure why you assume that a format won't work but if you have a copy of windows xp sp2, I'd recommend burning anything you want to save onto a cd or dvd and then doing a format and reinstall.

However, I'd suggest you consult some windows gurus and see if there's any kind of fix they know of that doesn't require a format beforehand. Just incase you don't really need to format.

Well, I still get the message. I hate this! In the middle of important convos or work, and BSOD. :evil:

Those were all found under System. Im thinking its a memory problem somehow, bad RAM? At this very moment, I have one cosiar 512 and one noname 256. How should I go about testing individually to see which is bad perhaps? How will I know if the memory itself is bad, or if its just a bad mobo port?

Opened up the case last night, popped out the 256mb stick. I awoke this morning to find that my computer had restarted (with only the cosair 512 stick in). So I popped that out, and found that only that specific port was full of DUST. The other two ports were clean, but that one was quite dusty. Could this possibly be the problem?

Ill leave it on during the day, and see how things are in the evening. I have switched the 512 stick to the second, clean port, and wiped the dust off the ram stick itself. The 256 stick still remains out for the time being.

Any ideas or suggestions?

So wait, you got dust inside a used ram slot? Odd :-?

That might help, I haven't heard of dust causing major problems but if it's causing your memory to lose connections occasionally it very well might be the problem :x

@xyrec: BSOD's aren't totally software related issues. I was getting constant BSOD when my HDD was failing because windows couldn't access certain critical files - a "software" problem perhaps but because the HDD was failing ;)

Hence why the BSOD are error specific.

Depending on what triggered them the message will be slightly different.

first 2 lines in the blue screen tells you what is wrong. looking at the post I will say it have been alot more easy to had maded a reinstallation.

I havent gone through the hassle of reformatting simply because I fear that it will resolve nothing. Somehow I can picture the BSOD coming up during the Windows installation or right after....which would be a HUUUGEEE pain to have just reformatted, and still get the same problem.

I can't help but believe its a hardware or driver issue. That has to be it, right? As far as RAM goes, I tried 3 different chips individually, one at a time, and each time I got the BSOD sooner or later. So I'm pretty much ruling out a faulty ram problem.

What else can it be? Note, when I boot up with an iPod or Flashdisk plugged in, I get the BSOD right away. The screen usually says PFN_LIST_CORRUPT or IRQL_DRIVER_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

As you already have mention yourself it hardware or driver problems.

I think your screen look like this. To find the problem, here I would do it:

1. Make a new installation

2. Let the computer run for day without installing any driver yet.

3. If it dump again at this time it clearly a hardware problem.

4. If not continue with driver installation

5. If it start dump again after drivers, it clearly something wrong with 1 of the drivers you use.

Always use lastest driver from the suppliers, can be you use a old and faulty 1
