October 2, 200520 yr Ok I just installed 2gb of RAM and a new 480w PSU, when I first booted up the computer it gave me this message: Special Presence Detect (SPD) device data missing or inconclusive. Properly programmed SPD device is required for reliable operation. DDR 333MHZ memory assumed at slowest timings. And then it said this: Intel reccomends 2X12 power connector or 2X10 power connector in conjunction with 1X4 alternate power connector. But I just use the power cord that came with my new PSU :? Halp.
October 2, 200520 yr Your memory sounds like it's unbranded, or incompatible with your motherboard. Cheap memory almost always has problems like that. Basically your motherboard can't read a memory setting that is built into the chips that tells it what speed it has to run at, so it defaults to 333MHz. About the PSU problem, sounds like you've not plugged in the little 4 pin connector. If you have a Celeron or Pentium 4, you'll need it. Check the motherboard for any missing connections. Notoriously Trollish.
October 2, 200520 yr Author Na its not unbranded memory, its PQI and I made sure that it was 184 pinn, pc3200 ddr RAM, which was what my last set of RAM was only it was 512 mb not 2gb, and was made by Infineon. And I will check out that power problem ty :) EDIT: I did a bit of research and it turns its not my power supply at all. Its a problem with my ram...Ill try to fix it...but Im not sure exactly why its giving me this message. The RAM is: PQI 2048MB DL CH KIT|PQI3200-2048DB and came with 2 sticks of 1024 RAM. I took out my old ram of 2x256 (512) and put these two new sticks in their place. I have 4 open RAM slots, but I only use 2 slots, maybe putting them in the other two slots will help any? October 3, 200520 yr I'd do a bit more research on your motherboard. Make sure it can handle 1gb memory sticks. With 4 memory slots, are you sure your motherboard is capable of 4gb of memory? Or are 4 x 512mb modules the largest you can have? (that would be 2gb) The max my board can take is 2gb of memory. I do not know if it can handle 2x 1gb sticks tho, uhhh where's a good hardware detector, I dont know what kinda mobo I have :wall:

October 4, 200520 yr Well, it looks like you have a Sony VAIO VGC-RB30 system but there are a few flavors. Go to Sony's support area and let it determine your exact system by clicking the appropriate button. http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-sy ... NAVDISP=pc I do see that there is a BIOS upgrade available to address some memory issues, but probably not what you're experiencing. I believe your system only supports 2gb memory, but you'll have to download your manual and spec's from SONY yourself.... and read up on installing additional memory.
