My laptop pretty much died this morning. I tried to turn it on, but the screen didn't activate. The fan ran for a few seconds and the power and bluetooth lights lit up, but it shut down again almost immediately afterwards. It's outside of the warranty, but is it worth taking into repair? Is there anything I can do myself?

Sounds like it's just an internal hardware problem. But as it often is, it's probably going to be more expensive to salvage it, than buying a completely new laptop.

 

 

 

The conditions sound a little odd. Necromagus, could you tell us if the BIOS shows up ?

 

 

 

Did you hear a whirring or a clicking sound just before the fan stopped functioning ? Did the speed of the fan go down slowly or did it come to a immeadiate stop ?

 

 

 

I suspect it might be something to do with the heatsink, but I'd rather not pry open a laptop.

 

 

 

Sometimes what happens is that the physical components, if not working will force the system to kick it, trying to prevent any further damage. So, if you fill us in with all the details before, during and after the bootup, we may be able to help more.

There is no bootup, nothing to indicate any kind of movement out of the BIOS. Pressing the power button causes the fan to rev up and the power and bluetooth lights to come on before the whole thing shuts down again. There are no strange noises and the fan goes down normally, no sudden stop.

I'd suggest getting a quote from the makers/fixers before making a dicision.

Already did, they expect it to run well over 200.

Is that just for the "checkup" ?

 

 

 

Or will they fix the problem after they've identified it ?

 

 

 

If you haven't sent it to the firm already, might I suggest something ?

 

 

 

This might sound crazy but take the battery out of the laptop casing and leave it aside for sometime. Try also, if you are a hardware guy, taking the RAM out of the laptop and switching the integrals - as in switch the RAM slots.

Or just unplug and take out the battery and put it back, it has worked for my friend in the past.
