Squash

For all those squash players out there, this is your thread to discuss this clever, fast-paced game with fellow players, whether you be country standard or just a social player. Squash is a great game to play with friends and competetively, and squash clubs often become meeting places for people to chat, play and become a community.

A big topic in the squash community at the moment is the Olympic Committee's decision not to put squash in the 2016 Olympics, in favour of Golf and Rugby Sevens. This is most likely due to the fact that squash is very difficult to televise, and audience size is always limited by the size of the courts, however the popular arguement to the contrary is that the Olympics would become the highest level of recognised squash acheivement, and an Olympic gold medal would crown the world champion squash player, but what do you think? Should squash by in the Olympics or not?

Got a game coming up and need some tips, or just need some help with practise and training? Feel free to ask here and I'm sure people will try their best to help you out.

Squash is a great sport, sadly the only time I can play it is during phys ed, since Canada only has a million ice hockey rinks and no squash courts :P

One technique I learned last week was if the server is putting the ball in the back corner (the ideal serve) all you gotta do is advance to your line and volley the ball out of the air into his front corner. It's a really hard shot but if you can nail that corner, its almost automatically your point. Forces the server to do another serve, and if he's only good at that one serve, it's pretty much you're game, too.

Best part of squash is winning 15-0 and not letting the other guy serve. The pain in their eyes as we shake hands... wonderful.

The back corner isn't actually the best serve, the best serve is to get it to scrape along the side wall about a metre or two before the back wall, so that the shot you mentioned can't be played. But yes that is a very good shot to do to take out dodgy servers, however if they get to the T as quickly as they should it won't be too hard to return. Winning off the return assumes that the person you are playing against has made a mistake so can't really be relyed on to win games.

But yes it's definitely one of those sports where a decent player will struggle to lose a point against anyone who's rarely played

After football, Squash is my favorite sport to play. Me and my friend did it for nearly three years and then they broke down the squash hall. It's so fast, and I really loved that, but it was even better to let the other person do all the running, show them every corner of the court. We didn't do it for competition, more for fun and to keep sporting. And after the game we always had drinks, we came late and had a click (is that the right word?) with the guy behind the bar, so it happened often that we went to sport at 9 in the evening and came back at 3 in the morning. Ah, good times, I hope the new hall will be finished soon.

You're absolutely right - but nobody in my class even tries to do "along the sidewall" serves :). I played the only player better than me the other day - we had a 5 full minute rally. Since we decided not to play with lets it got really intense and dangerous, we even started bleeding at our knees. He did a crazy "through the legs" shot into the nick to finish the long rally, I felt so tired and defeated yet happy when I saw the ball die.

That sounds crazy ... ... Awesome!!

But yea it's those really long rallies that make the game so great, none of that Ace crap like tennis
