YOU build my laptop

Featured Replies

Ok, I am tired of my new used laptop, and am planning on selling that as well as another older laptop I have, brining in around 650 bucks or so. I have a budget of from 900-1200 dollars. I don't really care if the graphics are incredible, as long as I can run my games on medium detail. I am quite a techy person, and was leaning towards this. Any ideas? I game, do vid/picture editing, and multimedia, yet nothing incredibly spec heavy.

I am highly technical, so any reasons for another would be appreciated. Christmas=deals as well.

either 15 inch or 17 inch, must be at least duel/quad core, with something around a 2+ ghz pro. and preferably a dedicated vid card.

I suggest against going with Dell, it might break early in its life. I also have a friend that some software stopped working after the college put stuff on it for classes, which didn't happen with my computer.

Go with an Asus or an HP instead.

^That being said, Asus laptops aren't amazingly cheap.

I say go with a Dell. I have several, and they are the only reliable laptops I've used. I have 2 HP laptops, both of which have cooling problems and ridiculously poor battery life. I've had a few drive crashes on each one.

On the other hand, my XPS M1330 is extremely reliable, gets about 4 hours with a standard battery, great screen. Since they've discontinued it, I'd say go with anything Dell, max out the RAM, get a decent hard drive size for your purposes, and use whatever is left over for processor upgrades.

Hp has solved that overheating problem one or two years ago, so it shouldn't be a problem here, and your crashes were probably caused by said overheating.

There's also Acer, they cost less and are made with cheaper components, but they work well and last long.

I'm sticking with my don't go with Dell, I see too many Dells having problems monthly.

While one of the HP crashes was cooling related, the other was hard drive failure. HP used a proprietary hard drive connector for the one that failed. For a 40GB hard drive, I spent a FORTUNE.

My success with Dell far surpasses my success with HP. Even with desktops. HP is extremely unreliable. I have an HP desktop that has experienced problem after problem (2 yrs old), while I have a 5 year old Dell that performs better, has never had a problem a day in its life, and is better compatible with upgrades. I have a 4 mo. old Dell desktop (XPS 630i) which is a beast. No problems. Obviously not a long term for judgement, but it has been reliable as can be. Dell support was also extremely helpful when I needed help fixing a setting on the laptop. (BIOS had a setting limiting the adjustment of the backlight via Windows. I was responded to within 2 minutes, off the line within 10.) HP, not so much.

Whatever you do, when you buy your laptop, unless you custom built it, reinstall the OS. All the crap that companies put on to new computer slows them down like a mofo.

^Read it. Reinstall your OS and your new laptop will be nice and fast. :thumbup:

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

Yes, I know to reinstall OS to get rid of the crapware. From personal experience, I have had nothing good to say about HP. Although I had problems with my Dell, they were all my fault, so I was leaning towards something else. I saw a sweet Toshiba I may lean too.

Qosmio X305-Q712 Laptop

* Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P7350

* Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium (SP1, 64/32-bit)

* 4GB DDR3 memory

* 320GB hard drive (7200rpm)

* NVIDIA® GeForce 9700M graphics (512MB)

* 10/100/1000 Ethernet

* Integrated webcam & FM tuner

This was around 1400 bucks around 3 months ago. With Christmas coming up, I think I could get one similarly priced with some slight upgrades. Looks aren't too important for me, but this one looks awesome. I would prefer even a 120 GB harddrive if it were 10,000 RPM, as I have very little in the way of media which I store on my laptop. Instead, it is backed up. However, the 10,000 RPM harddrive is rather hard to get in most laptops.

Go to bestbuy.com and its there featured special just below the banner. Im guessing they took the link down due to it being sold out online. So you would need to find a store with them in stock. Such a good deal so it will probably be hard to get one lol.

Ah I would recommend a Sony vaio, no dedicated video card but it is fast none-the-less.

Pardon me for bumping this topic...

What's the difference between purchasing a computer from Dell/HP and one from a site where you can customize your own computer and such (http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ or http://www.ibuypower.com/ibppages/CustConfig.aspx)? Would it mainly be warranty issues?

Edit: It seems you can customize your computer from Dell the same way you can in the websites I mentioned. Anyways, I still just want to know.

I don't think there's a difference, honestly, as long as you have what you want in the computer, it's worth getting it.

Oh em gee, the laptop you posed is the one I got 3 days ago!

It runs great, very cheap.

What kind of games are you planning on playing on it? Im playing some half life 2 on max, WOW, CA, stalker and all of them run just fine!
