Why do developers keep doing this?

I could also ask why gamers use escort missions as an excuse not to challenge themselves. The mission you described is actually pretty well designed. The enemy you're supposed to 'escort' follows you in stead of some preset path. It's also just as mobile as you are. You can use your whipfist to keep its attention without ever really risking it beating on you. I actually thought that the idea of escorting something that's trying to kill you was a nice twist.

It's not that it wasn't an alright idea (I did give it a chance at first), but there's just too much going on. By that point in the game and the location of the start of the level, you WILL get a military alert, and keeping it's attention while not dying can be annoying a hell. I've always thought that if anything other than you needs to survive, a level loses serious points.

The Blazing Angles games would have been great, but almost every mission was either escort or protection of an immobile unit.

I loath any kind of escort/partner mission. Oblivion was particularly annoying, but at least on partner missions you could tell them to stay put then do it yourself and collect them on the way out. The escort missions were the worst tho... dumb [wagon] AI would go charging into a pack of like 10 enemies and get killed in 3 hits... you basically had to charge ahead hope they didn't catch up.

GoldenEye's ah... Control (i think) was a [bleep]. Worst escort ever. Hopeless [bleep] :wall:
