A smudgstract.

That is barely a smudge. It sounds like you haven't been listening to my advice, which just pisses the [cabbage] out of me. Now, lets tell you what the key points where you have gone wrong and what you need to fix. At least it is an improvement.

First: Smudge only tags are hard. There needs to be a clearly defined focal, which you don't have. Right now my eyes don't know where to look. I guess 'Relapse' would be it, but it looks poor: it is slapped on and out of place.

Second: The colours look alright, but are way way to over-contrasted and monotone. Get some variation, and bring down the contrast.

Third: Flow, smudge tags need flow to generate interest. It creates a place for your eyes to move to. Bring in that: read tuts.

Fourth: Depth. Very flat looking, bring some depth.

I've given up. If you fail now on its your own fault. 4 months with little to no improvement. Oh well...

I'm not even gonna start on the gif...

You really regressed from before. Experimentation is fine but I wouldn't post anything that took you 5 mins to do.

The .GIF is just a bunch of pre-done "vector brushes" and an unnecessary animation that doesn't even make any sense. Not to mention that the animation is really jerky and the font used for it is one of the most annoyingly overused fonts for signatures (it's also a terrible font).

Shiny summed up the 1st one just fine so I won't sound like a broken record and just agree with him. It's a start but it just simply has no depth.

If you don't understand something please ask for clarification. We don't really know what you do or do not know so at times we might go over your head with something. It's better for you to just ask instead of try to guess what something might mean. What software are you using (currently)?

Also do you have a firm grasp on the various laws and rules of design? I'm talking about stuff such as balance, color theory, focal points and a lot of the more "boring" parts of art. If not I would strongly suggest reading up on all of these on the web, I can probably find some links if you are unable to. Knowing theory is a big big part of creating a good design and you would be surprised how much all of it applies even in an abstract piece. In all honesty learning the software is really important but I think what helps people improve is just knowing what is and is not good and, more importantly, knowing why it is or isn't good. I spent a few good years myself just doing jack-[cabbage] and sort of messing around in photoshop 5 (and then later 7). These days it is a lot easier to really sort of get good help, because not only is the software more advanced but there are just a lot more resources out there for artists. Back when I started I don't even remember brush packs being a big thing, most people would be flamed to hell if they used someone else's brush work in their own signature. What I'm trying to say is that today that is less of the case. Same thing with using images from the web, most people back then despised it but it's not as despised today (and encouraged at a lot of places).

Eh that was probably a lot less of actual C/C and more of just trying to throw some motivation your way. The worst thing to do is just be defeatist and give up. The best thing you can do is try and prove people wrong and get better. Just trying to say that even though people may be overly harsh (myself included) it was something all of us went through. I have seen a lot of artists go from being really terrible to really good over the years and in all honesty some people just do learn it slower than others. It took me 8 years to get to where I am today, yet I have seen a lot of people who have been doing this [cabbage] for just a couple of years and are already really good.

wow i appreaciate it alot! i currently am using gimp -.- wich is probably helping me suck at digi art. But im saving for fs hopefully the CS4 Collection wich costs alot lol. I would love some links and such. i do find it hard to use nearly all the laws and rules of art, as much as i want to and need to it just slips my mind. I cannot find a tut that is advanced but easy to understand.. The main aspects i think im missing (due to c/c) are: focal, positioning, light and shadow, contrast, smudging and blending. i Think ive grasped text and borders but i still to this day get told to master everything else before text. But i do appreciate all your help.

P.s - Gimp is a pain in the [wagon], cause every now and then i will hit say...colourize and it will close gimp down... -.-

I have smudge tutorials. Here, here, and here.

You're wrong. Your understanding of how a program works and how to actually make digi art is what you need.

I own both GIMP and Photoshop CS3 and I still use GIMP sometimes. Photoshop isn't that much better, and I actually prefer to use GIMP for tag-making in most cases. However when it comes to real art I'll admit I'm always using Photoshop.

Don't underestimate GIMP. It is the [cabbage]. Take away borders and text until you get good, because you haven't mastered them, and it looks bad.

And I've said this in everyone single one of your topics so far; ERASE EFFECTS OVER YOUR FOCAL. Seriously. It's a render too, you could just move the render layer up over your misplaced effects...

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

A bad workman blames his tools.

You don't need a big expensive program to make good art. I can use Notepad to make potentially complex websites, other people use Microsoft Paint to make astounding pixel art.

Listen to Nadril, he knows what he's doing.
