wingwinder
http://en.windows7sins.org/#5 Ugh so i was looking for some pictures of Windows 7 because it looks awesome, and i came upon this site. No matter what your views on Linux vs. Mac vs. Windows is I'm sure you can note that this site is ridiculous. They claim, at one point, that computer manufacturers are forced to put windows on their systems, which is untrue, they do it because it is the only choice that is profit to them, Apple will not allow Mac on any other computer then the ones them and their private manufacturers make, and Linux is free. They claim it poisons education when, in reality, it helps children. Windows is the most widespread operating system currently, so it would not make sense to teach children to use Linux or Mac, as they will meet those operating systems less in their lifetime. Then they complain about how Microsoft DEFENDS copyright, and claims that this is bad. They have a quote, that claims if most computers are unsecure then yours is as well, also untrue, the only time this could ever be true is if it is a new virus, but if it is then no one is secure to it, but this goes with ALL operating systems. Then they claim that Microsoft is violating your privacy, untrue as well, Microsoft views your files and scans your computer for virus's so they can come up with faster ways to stop a new bug. It made me laugh when they said they don't care about their users, this is so unbelievable. Personally, i think it is all just a conspiracy theory, on that site, and that Microsoft could monopolize the computing world and, i for one, would not care and computers would be in good hands. ClareJonsson
That site is a pure MS hate site, and a LOT of what they have stated is pretty much their own opinions, Here's some of the one I picked up on: Microsoft has attempted to block free standardization of document formats, because standards like OpenDocument Format would threaten the control they have now over users via proprietary Word formats.Well considering Open Office is allowed to use MS format documents I see this argument totally pointless. Microsoft regularly attempts to force updates on its users, by removing support for older versions of Windows and Office, and by inflating hardware requirements. For many people, this means having to throw away working computers just because they don't meet the unnecessary requirements for the new Windows versions.2 Points here, the first is that even my EeePC running EeeBuntu has regular updates to fix security issues etc. On to the forcing us to upgrade, it's the nature of computers to want the fastest and latest kit, and this isn't just to run an OS, Imagine what games we would be playing if computers never progressed. With Windows Media Player, Microsoft works in collusion with the big media companies to build restrictions on copying and playing media into their operating system.Too damn right they do, copying music and movies without paying for it is theft, good for them to enforce the law! Today, most children whose education involves computers are being taught to use one company's product: Microsoft's.Not "One Companies" products, but the most widely used. I work in the I.T. section in a university, and the reason we have Windows on all our Public Service machines is because we need students familiar with it as that is what they are expected to be using in the big wide world. If OSX or Linux superseded Windows, we would move with the times. Currently Windows is the dominant OS, but that may not always be the case. If another O.S. became more popular, then hardware manufacturers would be supplying that instead of Windows. Lets take a look at today's options:1. Windows - Easy to use and has a large driver and software base. 2. Linux (Such as Ubuntu): As user friendly as Windows, but if you're honest it's not ready for Joe Public yet. I cannot imagine my friend Donna using Linux as you still have some configuration issues such as manually editing config file. That is beyond a lot of people. If it's not in a GUI, you can forget it for a mass section of the public.2. OS X Snow Leopard - The most user friendly OS around, It has a smaller but rapidly growing software base but the big downside it that it's tied to Apples Hardware, Which is currently a lot more expensive than a PC. And if Apple had the dominant system, Windows7Sins would probably be called OSX-Sins. [Assist-X]
Futurama
hahah, sad. okay... Basically the reason DRM failed is because Microsoft didn't hop onto the power of online music quickly enough. Apple did with iTunes, that's why it's responsible for so much revenue. DRM was never forced upon anyone, it was microsoft's rather crappy system to encourage legal downloading. These "big media companies" they speak of would be the RIAA, the same company Apple work with to ensure legalities. The reason most children are taught microsoft is because for common tasks, it's the standard. Apple know this, that's why their computers are tailored towards music and video editing. Most skills from these are quickly transferrable onto other formats anyway, so it's a null point. Fast typing is THE most important skill you'll ever need in computing, and both formats use QWERTY. Microsoft doesn't remove support for it's products, the "X" format in Office was created because the old format wasn't capable of what they wanted Office to do. Microsoft have also released compatibility packs for older versions of Office. Not to mention that most software can be run in compatibility mode, making most software backwards compatible and allowing old software to work on a new computer. Anyway, cretinous site. Still, freedom of speech eh?
The Runar
Yeah, everyone should just use the OS that suits their own needs the best and shut up about how the others suck blah blah. Windows is good for most users, lots of programs and games, most things are easy to do, easy to get support because of high usage. I haven't tried Mac (yet), but from what I've heard it's really easy to use and great for media editing and such. But also expensive, because you also need Apple's hardware. Linux has the best customization, most distros and programs are free, but there aren't too many programs (especially games) and it is harder to use than the other ones. Also must be installed manually (usually). Myself I use Arch Linux, as it is extremely fast (no useless programs or drivers - installs in under 5 mins! ), offers the best customization (beginning from which desktop you choose - it doesn't include anything), uses very little disk space (again, no useless programs or drivers), and is awesome for a hacker like me. So just use the OS that works for you and quit whining about others. Nadril
Too damn right they do, copying music and movies without paying for it is theft, good for them to enforce the law! I agree with everything you said Clair, but I just had to nitpick this part. It isn't theft, it's copyright infringement -- and there is a large difference between the two. I'm not sure what their point was with WMP anyways, you aren't forced to use it on a microsoft OS. Plus at any rate I'm strongly against most forms of DRM. The rest of that site is pretty bad though. I haven't tried Mac (yet), but from what I've heard it's really easy to use and great for media editing and such. But also expensive, because you also need Apple's hardware. There really aren't any advantages to design for using a Mac over a PC. I prefer a PC more-so and for some aspects of design (3D) I much prefer a PC over a mac. The only reason I could see using a Mac would be for something like Final Cut Pro which is only available on it, but then again you can just use something like Sony Vegas on PC instead.
