Updated Portfolio layout

I've been getting really annoyed with my current portfolio, mostly because I just don't think it looks that great and I didn't build it with the best usability intentions in mind at the time. I feel like I've learned a hell of a lot since I made it so I'm starting a new one from scratch.

Again my focus is on a professional looking site, I'm trying for a more normal look to it this time around though. No crazy weird minimalism and stuff.

WIP 2 DARK

Few notes:

- Made few slight changes (a stroke, changed link placement)

- The somewhat "random" looking blue text will be for emphasis once there are actual things said there. Obviously it might not be the same word placement, but you get the picture.

- Dotted lines : yay or nay?

Just trying to get some critiques on some of the rough placement of things at this point. Not really sure what I'm going to do with that logo-text thing yet, it's sort of a placement thing at this point. Ah well, once I'm happy with this page I'll work on the images page.

I think the design looks really nice, 'specially the color scheme. Add a tad more of blue, and the colour is sweet. I'm not really too keen on your placement of Home/And jazz, I'd have it so it is in line with the right side of your picture. Other than that, there isn't much to complain about.

That was the biggest thing I was thinking of changing, haha. Yeah I do think I'll move it over.

Thanks.

Font's were Rockwell and Ariel if you were curious. Hopefully this should fit on the 960 grid system as well, it'll be interesting using that.

Also I'm glad I had some big 3D thing I liked enough to show off, I thought it worked well as a preview image sort of thing.

It looks really prosaic to me; I know it's on a WIP, but I think you can do much better than this.

If you've seen how my WIP's start you would know that I start out with basic outlines and such first. I'm not going to waste a bunch of time only to change up the layout.

That being said what would you do to change it? Unless you think the actual base layout is unimaginative in which case I would ask what should I change about the layout.

edit: that sounded a little defensive, sorry.

I'm trying a dark scheme and a few things out to see if it looks any more interesting.

Before I go any further, do you guy's think this dark scheme will work better?

I know the sort of style your going for, I just don't think you've executed it quite right. It just doesn't give me that "wow, this is quite cool" which is my normal response to most of your artwork.

The one thing that's really putting me off is the choice of font. I appreciate the fact that you are trying to build a site using standard fonts, but your old style of "use myriad pro for most stuff" actually worked really well.

It's a little better, but you can't see the blue very well; change that to a more cyan sort of color. I was just thinking it would be quite cool if you implemented a cycler which goes through all the images in your portfolio, which changes the banner you see each time you visit the homepage. I also think that the page shouldn't be as wide as it is - even on a 24 inch monitor, I have to scroll across a little to see the whole site, so you have to consider size optimization too.

- I'll mess around with color.

- I don't have many images worthy of being on the front page, so I'd rather just show my best there.

- It's at 1680x1050 currently. The actual content area is 1248 x 1050, which would pretty much fit just fine on a 1280x1024 resolution without any real scrolling (there is extra width with no text on the bottom so they shouldn't really have to scroll). I could adjust for a 1024x768 resolution but I just feel like for its purpose that doesn't seem like I need to do that, because I'm aiming at both a personal use (most people who are viewing this won't have a 1024x768 resolution monitor) and a business use, and I really don't think any businesses are going to be using 1024x768 resolution (roughly 17" monitor) monitors.

I like it, though as Sam said, it doesn't have that 'wow' factor. I can't quite put my finger on what could be improved, but I did pick a couple of little things that bug me.

- Blue highlighted words at the bottom are too dark, I recommend the same colour as 'portfolio' in the header.

- The links on the top right do not quite line up with the edge of the image box, which throws it off a little as it is aligned at the botom, and on the other side.

Take my advice with a pinch of salt though, as I am probably not the best person to advise you on web design.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

nay on the dotted lines. i think it may be too proper, too dry, too "text book".

I'm not sure what exactly you could do, maybe add a creative element, hard to do without ruining the professional aspect tho.

The large image as a slider/scroller between other images will work well for a portfolio.

What you need is some change in colour for the 3 sections perhaps. And also the use of relevant icons. Try use icons from a single set. ( http://weloveicons.com/ )

Try look for some inspiration/ideas from http://themeforest.net/
