Whaling

Just a quick note, someone said if there weren't humans whales wouldn't be going extinct.

1. How do you know?(not trying to be a smart [wagon] but seriously u never know)

2. Really what is going on is natural, humans are an animal we and a predator and any animal we find tasty is our prey, we just use tools. While this might be hard to come to terms with its the truth, if chimps could figure out how to make and throw spears do you think they wouldn't?

Do you see animals killing on an industrial scale for commerce in nature? Do you see animals killing en masse for oil to use in consumer products? I didn't think so either.

Yes as a matter of fact I do the animal's scientific name is homo sapien. Do you think that if say, bears had brains that allowed them to progress to where we are technologically that they wouldn't be doing the same things? And while this isn't a great example there is a wasp that stuns a type of caterpillar and lays its eggs in it, so it is essentially a walking nursery until they hatch and then it is food. I think you could consider the first to be a "commercial" use. Again the analogy is weak at best but at the time i can't think of a better one.

Yes your analogy is weak considering that you're actually talking about a parsitic relationship which has nothing to do with commerce and you know excactly what I meant when I referred to animals you were trying to be clever. Your bear argument is laughable and irrelevant also. I don't mind disagreeing with people on these forums (it's a daily occurence for me) but to say that the extinction and near-extinction of many of these whale species is a natural phenomenon is nonsense. In the natural world animals tend to kill other species for sustenance and over territorial issues, mass commercial whaling doesn't fall into either category.

I'm going to make this easier on all of us and just stop arguing, I'm not going to change my opinion and you are not going to change yours. No matter how clearly I explain myself you will still find room for error. Take it as a victory if you will, I lack the time or the patience to argue.

We're really the only predators to, for sake of example and because they were the most hunted, a sperm whale, except maybe orcas. And even then orcas don't hunt them down all that much. And I'll agree, any other species that could come this far would be capable of doing the same...but would they? After all, we no longer have any need to hunt whales, and another species may have the ability to say "Y'know, this really isn't necessary anymore, besides being illegal. Maybe we should stop." But of course, you never know. And all of your analogies lean towards animals that have an active need to hunt down its prey (like the wasp or bears). The difference is that we don't need to hunt whales, it's not like beef or pork or anything.

I've done some research on what actually happens to whales once they've been "whaled". Apparently they use the blubber in soap, use bones in fertilizer, some places still use the oil for lighting, and some species provide leather. Also specifically the sperm whale provides ambergris. Seems to me like all of the whale is being used. Not to mention most countries don't whale anymore, whats the argument?

The argument is that Japan is continuing whaling under the guise of "Scientific Research" even after being reprimanded by the international community. That too whaling species which are already fragile.

When there is no actual "need" for them to do so.

And secondly, yes, most countries do not whale anymore. But Japan does, and it's got 128 million people

The ironic thing is that Japan is actually stockpiling huge quantaties of frozen whale meat as it sells so poorly.
