Herblore Training

Right now the best gp/xp pots to make that are worth making are prayer potion, super energy, and super attack. All about the same gp/xp going for herbs to potions. I say worth making because they're the only decent gp/xp that aren't insanely slow xp/hour.

Here's a link to the spreadsheet I used to find these gp/xp if you want to look at it yourself.

I've always raised my herblore by farming the herb seeds I get from slayer and making potions from them. I make a lot of money off my herblore that way instead of loosing money.

No, it's not free/profitable training; you always have to consider the opportunity cost of just selling the herbs instead of making pots, in other words you are just not seeing the bigger cash pile that you would have otherwise.

I do look at the opportunity cost....the opportunity cost is having a nooby herblore level. I don't care if I would make more money just selling herbs...the way I see it...that money would eventually get spent on herbs anyways eventually, so instead of selling then now, and then just wasting time later buying them back, I just use them now, and make money.

The *best* option in my opinion is magic potions. They're around 26 gp/xp if you add the herbs yourself, 30ish with unf pots. I would suggest unf. I would not even consider attack, energy or prayer potions... they may be cheap, but the best among those(energy) are nearly 60 less experience per potion, and using magics will save you about 3k mixings over the levels that you want to train.

That's what I said when I decided I'd farm all my toadflax for 85 maybe 88 herblore but then I figured out that selling the herbs and buying different herbs for better gp/xp would be a much better idea.

Only problem with that is it's an extra ~9m for that 3k less mixings doing unf, about 2 hours of work, or an extra ~5m doing herbs to pots, about 3 hours of work. Spending that much extra money for a few hours (2-3) doesn't seem worth it unless you make about 3m/hour.

Actually, he is essentially spending some of his profits from farming to train herblore, while still ending in the black. You should think of the two actions independently, and to my knowledge, herb farming is a very efficient means to make money.

He brings up a good point, the exp you get from the most profitable herbs is probably not up to par with the better training methods, so the opportunity cost could be greater than the marginal benefits.

I also like farming it all myself, because I make a more variety of potions, ones that I actually use. I'll agree I could of gotten more levels if I were to farm one cash herb, sell it then spend on other potions. But the way I see it, it's more of a convenience factor for me. I don't have to worry about running out of super sets, or prayer potions, or anti-fires, since I make them with seeds/herbs from my slayer tasks.

It also gives me a reason to farm other cash crops like limpwurts, papayas, and ivy bushes.....but that's a whole differnet subject :P

It's all about adjusting to how you need to play, technically it would be more efficient to just farm cash herbs and buy all the pots you need, but the point is to just have fun :D ; no matter what be sure to farm herbs: whether for extra exp or cash for training it can't hurt. The same arguments can also be applied to herbs you get from MTK (Which if you don't already do, that's a must for cash).

for 81-85, you can just clean herbs at 90k exp/hour with mouse keys. It's not bloody fast, but if you want only a few levels, it's the way to go. If you plan on going to overloads, I suggest special restore pots. Under 30gp/exp when I did it, and over 350k exp/hour.

Its over 1m exp and I would rather get it in 3 hours then 10 hours, since I'm leveling all my skills to 85.

Also, since some of you don't know what opportunity cost actually is:

Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best choice available to someone who has picked between several mutually exclusive choices. It is a key concept in economics. It is a calculating factor used in mixed markets which favor social change in favor of purely individualistic economics. It has been described as expressing "the basic relationship between scarcity and choice." The notion of opportunity cost plays a crucial part in ensuring that scarce resources are used efficiently. Thus, opportunity costs are not restricted to monetary or financial costs: the real cost of output forgone, lost time, swag, pleasure or any other benefit that provides utility should also be considered opportunity costs.
