Thinkin bout builiding this

So anyway a couple weeks back my much loved laptop (which honestly wasnt all the flash even a few years back when it was brand new) died. So i pulled out another old desktop computer we had lieing around from upgrading some computers parents work.. anyway its not to bad.. could probably just put a graphics card in and it would be good for some more low spec games (i was getting like 9 fps on css, lol..) but then i realised id need a bigger power supply.. also the harddrive was like 30gb so i have my old laptop one in there now (bought a brand new 350gb harddrive for it 2 weeks before it completely died, as the harddrive decided to not work anymore :D) but anyway... figured while im spending all this cash why not go the full way and make a brand new computer.

So.. Dont have a very high budget but was thinking something like this:

CPU: Intel Core i3 530 Dual Core (2.93GHz, 733MHz GPU) - $166: https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/132731/CPU_INTEL_SOCKET_1156/Intel/BX80616I3530.asp

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H Motherboard - $136 : https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/132747/MOTHERBOARD_INTEL_SOCKET_1156/Gigabyte/GA-H55M-UD2H.asp

HDD: Samsung 500GB 7200rpm Serial ATA-II HDD w. 16MB Cache (500gb samsung) - $75: http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/133508/HDD_INTERNAL_SATA-II_DRIVES/Samsung/HD502HJ.asp

GPU: Point of View GeForce 9800GT - 1GB DDR3, 256-bit, DVI, VGA, HDTV, HDMI, Heatsink, SLI - PCI-Ex16 v2.0 - $139: https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/116934/VIDEOCARDS_GEFORCE_PCI-EXPRESS_2.0_SERIES/Point_of_View/POV-PC9800GT-1G.asp

PSU: A-Power 860W - $43: http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/136319/POWERSUPPLIES_800W_-_899W/A-Power/P4-A860.asp

RAM: Generic 2GB (1 x 2GB) PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 RAM (maybe x2) - $65: https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/126993/MEMORY_MEMORY_DDR-3_RAM/Generic/C2G-D3-1333-O.asp

Case: Ikonik EN1 Midi-Tower Case - $49: https://www.techbuy.com.au/p/131169/CASINGS_MIDI-TOWER/Ikonik/IC-E1DBT-J000.asp

the mother board has surround sound built into it which saves me from needing a sound card. And have heaps of CD drives around.

but yea what im wondering is;

- Will this be any good? (will it be relatively fast, i will be using it mainly for games, with occasional video editing and such)

- Is this graphics card any good? would like to play games such as MW2 ect. not much of a gamer though really.

- Is there any thing i should swap for other things with similar prices?

- Anything i could swap to make this thing abit cheaper?

- would an extra 2gb of ram make alot of difference? even the cheapest ddr3 ram i could find is pretty expensive :S

oh and ofcourse if anything doesnt work with eachother.

anyway... just any tips/advice/opinion/whatever would be appreciated :D

RAM, you might as well get 4GB DDR3 since 2GB wont cut it for Win7/Vista + Games.

Power Supply, Overkill. 600W is PLENTY enough.

CPU, Might as well got for a Quad-Core

HDD, Pay to $100 and you can get a 1TB from Computer Fairs.

In my opinion you can build a more stronger computer for your cash pool if you use DDR2 Gear since shops are trying to get rid of it to make way for DDR3, We spent about 350$ making a similar build to above, only it was 2GB Ram, 350GB HDD (They use a 1TB External) and had a inbuilt G-Card into motherboard for 95$. But, if you want to go all mainstream and have the latest, stuff above will help keep it running smoothly. (HDD Optional if you have ALOT of Anime,Games or Porn.)

well i just put that power supply in there cuase it was like $5 more then like a 500W one of the same brand, all though i might look into a brand i know is decent.

might look into some older stuff cuase yea, as u said, is quite abit cheaper :o

Lol.

A 600w psu for 29. Maybe there's a reason for this price you think?

You'd find a proper, well built, 300w psu for the same price.

A proper 600w psu will cost around 80, atleast.

He's Australian, so your currency is thrown out the window there, but yes that is a little too cheap for a 800W+

No.

Convert the Australian dollar to Euro and you get 29.

I couldn't find the specs of that power supply (as in the number of A on the 12V etc), but that processor does perform pretty good, well that's the same processor I put in my recent budget build and I like it very much. I chose an Asus board though. As for the video card, I'd go with a company that doesn't look as cheap as the one you chose, I would go with EVGA or BFG or something, and they have a better warranty too.

I'd actually suggest the opposite, get a 320gig for $40-45. Save a little money and it will be plenty of space for quite a while. Upgrade later if you need to.

thanks for the advice guys. the power supply is a little dodgy lookin yea so might re consider that :P

also was thinking about going with older sort of stuff, but if i was to make it with this it would mean at a later date i could upgrade the proccessor to a i5 or i7 or something, and faster ram ect as the prices fall abit. Spose it would be abit mroe future proof if i stuck with this.

as for the harddrive ill be moving the 350gb one i have running in my computer atm into it anyway, probably as a second drive as i dont think its as fast (its from my laptop, so just 5400rpm, idk if that makes much of a difference but yea) and might get a smaller one for my c.

One other thing ive been wondering though is what sort of cooling stuff should i be looking at? The case thing says it has a fan or something but ill need something to cool the cpu with right? Until recently i havent been very technical but have been reading about overclocking and will probably try overclocking the computer abit, so what sort of cooling will i need? Still trying to stick to a low budget

edit: http://www.ikonik.com/ENs/EN1.php this shows more about the case. another thing i was wondering is would there be cables to connect the front usb ports and such to the motherboad included with the case or will i need to buy those too? And if so what will i need.

anyway just looked into the power supply. finding the a-power thing wasnt easy on the net, did find a review though of like a 650W one, which actualyl showed the labels on it where a load of crap, the second 12v rail thing wasnt even connected and ect ect.. so im looking at better brand'ed ones now. things like Antec, Pc power, OCZ, Corsair... but they all seem fairly expensive.

Anyone know of good cheap power supply which would power this nicely with room to upgrade/overclock?

You should never go for a cheap power supply as it is the most important part of the computer. If it dies it could bring other parts of the computer with it.

For a PSU, some good brands are Corsair and Antec. A cheap PSU is likely to [bleep] your parts up. Also 1 rail > 2 rail etc. Here's one.

I'd also go with an ATI card over an nVidea card. Don't know what others on here think, but all my tech-savvy friends will always suggest ATI over nVidea.

I just usually suggest the card that's most bang for the buck. Same goes for cpu.

People are a bit strange i have to say... Since alot of the time, especially kids, say "ATI suck!" "Intel suck!" etc etc... I really don't understand why people are so damn fond over brand-x when it comes to cpu/gpu. I just logically think, most bang for the buck. If that's Nvidia or ATI doesn't really matter.

If a person who's gonna build a computer and look for a specific brand, such as Nvidia, then yeah, of course you look for a fitting card.

I don't know why i'm writing this but i just felt the need to.

And also, a 650w psu for his build is way over the top.

This would be more than sufficient. And some room for upgrading too.

This one is the next i'd look at. But unless you're planning on updating cpu+gpu in less than two years, i wouldn't bother. Running a ATI 5830 with the Antec 400w (with your current setup for example) would be no problem.

I've never understood brand loyalty between video cards (or processors). ATI/Nvidia, AMD/Intel, they all have fast expensive hardware and cheaper slower hardware. I've gone back and forth between them in all combinations and they have all worked fine.

Meh, I prefer Nvidia because of the drivers and the fact that people seem to have less trouble with them than the Ati Cards. For the drivers, the reason is that Ati makes very good card, but the Nvidia card of the same range and quality will probably outperform it because of the better drivers.

ok so i somehow got sidetracked from studying back to looking at parts for this thing, god it can burn alot of time :o

thinking bout switching the 9800GT graphics card for an ATI 5770, likes like another $50 but from what ive read its quite abit better. Anyone know much bout these cards?

Yes it's a good card. If you feel it's worth it, go for it.

I wrote a bit about it here: http://forum.tip.it/topic/259541-making-my-computer-more-up-to-date/
