Over the last month, players have been battling to prove that their pen is mightier than the longsword by writing short stories based on either the Zamorak or Saradomin campaigns for our Armies of Gielinor story competition. By the time the competition closed we’d received well over a thousand entries, which meant that picking the winners was going to be no mean feat! Finally, though, we managed it and are happy to announce the recipients of lifetime membership for their RuneScape accounts.

 

After much debate, the judges decided that the best Zamorak campaign-inspired story was entered by celticqueen8, whose story really impressed all the judges due to its humour and originality. Dimitrix is a very worth runner-up thanks to a song which made him stand out from the crowd.

 

Meanwhile, the judges’ favourite Saradomin campaign-inspired entry came from Lunestruck, whose wildly imaginative story really captured the attention of the judges. The runner-up in that category was roleutrio.

Gods play games with the lives of men. Not chess--only two sides. Not poker--too many rules. No, gods prefer dice. It's fair, and there's always an opportunity to cheat.

 

In Gielinor, there are many gods and many games. But only three gods matter, and only one game decides the fate of the realm.

 

"MYSELF BLESS IT!" swore the god in red and black robes. His eyes were scarlet embers, and glistening horns protruded from the sides of his head.

 

"calm down zamorak," said the god on Zamorak's right. He was dressed in druidic robes and the only thing of note on his head was the lack of hair. "it's just a game."

 

"YOU WOULDN"T SAY THAT IF YOU HAD LOST."

 

"You Win Some, You Lose Some," replied the god on Zamorak's left. His long snow-white beard obscured part of his sky-blue robes. "Shall We Get On With The Game Then? I'd Like To Test My Rangers Against Your Army, Zamorak."

 

Zamorak snorted. "THEY'LL BE EASY TO DEFEAT."

 

"count me out for this round," Guthix said.

 

"VERY WELL. YOUR ROLL, SARADOMIN."

 

Saradomin picked up the dice and threw.

 

They landed on a triangular table, upon which a map of Gielinor lay. This was no ordinary map, for it was the same size as the land it detailed.

 

"Two Sixes And An Eight. That's My Barbarian To The Portal And Two Rangers To Yours."

 

Zamorak examined the three cubes. "CHEATER. THAT'S MY DOMAIN." He tossed the dice. "AHA. THREE NINES."

 

"Now Who's Cheating?" challenged Saradomin.

 

Their game was watched by several other beings of power.

 

"Oh, I love this part,” commented Iban. "Necromancers and their skeleton armies. Beat that Saradomin!"

 

"Astnhott'nwl?ohyunhaot," queried the Chaos Elemental.

 

"Of course it was an unholy throw! He's Zamorak, isn't he?" responded a dwarf god.

 

"...ossseugI," the elemental said doubtfully.

 

The dice thrown by Saradomin and Zamorak were cubes no longer. The battling gods threw glowing orbs that flickered red and blue as each tried to outmaneuver the other.

 

Oohs went up from the spectators as Zamorak rolled Complete Obliteration and destroyed Saradomin's remaining forces.

 

"AS I SAID. THEY WERE EASY TO DEFEAT," Zamorak said smugly.

 

"shall i play winner?" asked Guthix as Saradomin stalked angrily away. "i have some sea slugs i want to try out."

 

"YOU'RE ON. MY ROLL." Zamorak threw, and the games began anew as they have done for centuries.

I circled the pinnacle of the fortress, gazing over the battlefield. The cold evening wind bit at my face; the Sun was hidden behind a veil of clouds, offering no succour. Beneath me, the thunderous drums of war matched my powerful wing-beats, yet the armies stood still with unfazed determination. My fellow Icyenes were resting on the ground, saving every bit of ardour for the battle. Keen eyes watched my every move with hatred; I was the Icyene who betrayed Saradomin.

I sought what Zaros embodied; The Empty Lord, nothingness itself, was what I believed in. Despite his influence, force was necessary to spread his views and fight back everyone’s desires. The other two gods had no goal, engaging in meaningless violence for the sake of control. After Zaros purged the world of their thirst for power, there would be nothing to stop his endeavour.

In everyone’s eyes, I was mad, a lunatic, for believing what I did. The most glorious and devout follower of Saradomin, corrupted by the evil of Zaros. It mattered not, however, that I warned Zaros of the approaching danger and joined him, for the battle was inevitable. I had lit the match, but the gods had spread the oil.

My fellow warriors bore no judgment in their hearts, a courtesy I could never expect from the opposing forces. A monstrous thirst for battle glazed their eyes, their mouths and claws twitching in anticipation of the order Zaros would give. A simple flick of the Zarosian General’s wrist, and the army’s battle cry shook the heavens. Emitting throat-splitting screeches, they bolted into the nightmare.

I stayed back and watched the horror unfold. Swords clashed with claws, arrows pierced acquiescent flesh, spells charred armour. This was not what I desired. I painfully observed Saradomin’s forces. Their lean, animal forms gracefully navigated the battlefield, fighting back our brutish forces. What was I now, by supporting the monsters on my side? Hate, and hated; cruelty, and cruel. Violence, evil, was not what I stood for.

Zaros watched from his temple, wearing a disturbingly blank expression. Why did he choose this as the route to peace? In that brief moment of clarity, I understood that he could not fulfill his ideal. The only ones fighting for a just cause were the blue-clad warriors resisting the evil. I dove into the battlefield, determined to help my true comrades bring peace.

Alarmed Arthon looked at in the distance was a dark plume of smoke seen in the direction of the gate, sharply outlined against the blue sky. Logram same direction was discussed. With eyes intently he watched the black plume of smoke, as if in that way could find out what the cause was.

Arthon was just toward the dark plume of smoke when he was just running in the neighborhood heard a bang. "By the gods!" Arthon shouted, a demon, here!? There was a huge plume of smoke from the demon and began to crush all the houses, he sped along a single direction the demon paladins. Arthon ran after them but was stopped by one of them, "go to the south district and stay there," said the Paladin. "No, I need to know if everything is okay with my brother!" Arthon shouted at the paladin. Suddenly Arthon a hand on his shoulder and heard unintelligible whisper softly in his head, everything went black before his eyes.

 

Arthon was coughing up, he smelled the stench of burning flesh and wood, and when he looked toward where he had seen the demon he saw that the northern quarter was totally destroyed after a number of buildings. Suddenly a monk ran up to him. "What happened?" Early Arthon.

"The northern quarter of the city is destroyed, there are dozens of injuries and deaths, there are even a number of people taken by the enemy army, we do not know."

Jagex Fansite Support Programme

 

Did you know, Jagex supports around 30 fansites...? Some have been running for years, and others are springing up all of the time – in fact, on a weekly basis, we come across more and more fan-run sites, and we’re blown away by the dedication, content and community minded focus of all of them.

 

Why do Jagex support fansites?

 

Fansites are a fantastic source of help for many players and they often form entire communities of like-minded players around them. We’ve always loved the fact that fan-run sites often develop their own collective personalities and we find a lot of useful, honest feedback comes from their communities.

 

To us, those who are fansite admins are true community pioneers – they give up their own time to help other players, to build communities, and to offer support, help and game playing advice to their community.

 

Since 2009 we have been building relationships and contacts with a great many of them - we want to show our appreciation to these fan-run sites publicly by actively trying to help them, and we also want to encourage more dedicated players to set up their own community sites.

 

What does support mean?

 

We offer a number of key areas of support to fansites, for example; exclusive interviews with members of Jagex staff, concept art from certain updates, support with competitions/events they run and even the occasional sneak preview. Through this support we try to help fansites grow their communities.

 

What this is definitely doesn’t mean, though, is that we want to control the discussion or opinions on those sites – whilst our support is conditional in terms of sites upholding our rules, being safe, and wanting fan-run sites to ensure there are no real world trading or gaming ads, we neither want nor expect to have any editorial control. We understand that fans have frank opinions and discussion, and we want this to always be the case – in fact, it’s great to have feedback whether we like it or not!

 

How we want to support fan-run sites from now on

 

We’ve learnt a great deal over the last year or two, and now we want to make it much clearer what we consider when looking at supporting a fansite. So, we’ve created the fansite support programme which has four levels of support.

 

To keep things simple we called these levels Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each level unlocks support depending on a number of factors including the size of a fansite, how community orientated they are, and how much they support they offer players:

 

Bronze

 

Welcome on board! You may be a big or small fansite, but we have made contact for the first time, and we like the look of your site. We’ll get to know each other, send you the introductory fansite pack, and start talking!

 

Silver

 

You’ve clearly put a lot of work into maintaining your website with a number of regularly updated guides and tools. Importantly, you understand the damaging affect Real World Trading adverts have on the game and you actively block/remove these from your website. You’ll have built a strong community around your site and you might have seen an increase in visitors. We’ll give you a helping hand with occasional announcements.

 

Gold

 

You offer players an array of useful, frequently updated tools and guides and, as with Silver fansites, you will have built a strong community around your site and may have started to have a real impact on the game’s community. Gold fansite owners not only understand the damaging effect Real World Trading adverts have, but they also understand that gaming adverts push players away from their website and from the game they support, so they actively block/remove these from their website.

 

In return, you can expect far more support than Silver or Bronze fansites, with regular staff interviews, artwork, and even the occasional scoop! Importantly, you’ll be among the core of fully recognised fansites and we’ll see what we can do to help you grow with professional website advice, advertising support, access to our hidden fansite admin forum and merchandise for competition giveaways.

Platinum

 

Platinum level fansites are, quite simply, awesome.

 

They’re often the first websites you think of when you’re after help, events, information, tools or when you’re just looking to get involved in the community! By focussing on keeping their website completely up-to-date while supporting and growing their communities, they manage to attract a huge number of players to their website on a daily basis.

 

We’ve reserved the majority of exclusive concept art, staff interviews and competition merchandise for these and we’ll work very closely with them to help them grow. To give us a chance to catch up, we’ll also invite Platinum fansite owners to a Jagex jolly once a year!

The 1st place for Zamorak's was pathetic imo.

I've seen Plane Crashes more funnier then that story.

Does anyone want me to properly translate the Sara runner-up?

I have to say the Zamorack winner was definately a strategic choice by jagex: the whole story itself is completely plagarized from a Terry Pratchett book. This is a jagex ploy to get younger players to write more, and get integrated into the game more. Judging by the categories they outlined for the competition, this story is mediocre at best.

 

wiki isn't on the site as it has advertising that conflicts with runescape's policy. Discussion pages on many articles also explain the many flaws jagex have had up through the years, and show images of the serious bugs runescape struggles with, and has struggled with. These are two major reasons for why they are not on the list: they're just too good in showing teh whole of runescape, not just what jagex wants.

I really think Jagex hare showing how unprofessional they really are, in the current sceme of things. yes, most of their employees come right out of uni to lead sections of the team, so they all lack experience, but their mistakes are so blatantly obvious on many levels (as is their propaganda-like media strategy) that it's becoming unacceptable.

Together they walked out the smithy and both went in separate directions.

 

Smiling Arthon walked through the street, he wasnt feeling hungry at all. Arthon only wanted to go to the inn to see Lertisa, de innkeepers daughter. Logram probably knew this but didnt mention it in front of father, he thought. Tonight, Arthon planned to talk to her as he found out from his cousin that Lertisa fancied him as well.

 

Suddenly the clear blow of a horn arose from the centre of the city. Unsettled Arthon looked up, in the distance a dark plume of smoke could be seen, towards the gates, clearly visible against the blue sky. Logram went in that direction. With a tense gaze he looked at the column of smoke, as if in doing so he could discover the cause of it. Just as Arthon wanted to run towards the dark plume of smoke he heard a bang nearby. By the gods! Arthon exclaimed, A demon, here!? A giant demon emerged from the smoke and started crushing the houses, a unit of paladins passed him and rushed towards the demon. Arthon ran after them but was halted by one, go to the southern district and stay there said the paladin. No! I have to know if my brother is safe! yelled Arthon to the paladin. Suddenly, Arthon felt a hand touching his shoulder and he heard a soft, unintelligible whisper in his head, and everything went black before his eyes.

 

Coughing, Arthon stood up. He smelt the stench of burned flesh and wood and when he looked in the direction he saw the demon he discovered the northern district was totally destroyed save for a few buildings. Suddenly a monk came running towards him. What happened? asked Arthon. The northern city district is destroyed, there are dozens of wounded and dead, and there are even some civilians taken by the enemy army, thats all we know.
