IN-DEPTH Gem Rock Mining Guide

Recommended Posts

This guide should give a closer look at gem mining and ways to make it extra efficient.

INTRODUCTION

Requirements:

  • Access to Shilo Village
  • Completion of entire Karamja Dairies
  • 20 Mining (this is the minimum...the higher, the better)
  • Rings of Dueling or Amulets of Glory
  • NOT REQUIRED, but access to a Dragon Pickaxe and Mining-boosting familiars can be helpful

Gem Mining Benefits:

  • 30k+ XP per hour
  • 750k + GP per hour
  • Good source of Uncut Gems

INVENTORY

Here is an Ideal Inventory of items you NEED to carry with you.

ARM: Dragon Pickaxe, Rune Pickaxe

HAND: Karamja Gloves 3 (no substitute)

RING: Ring of Dueling

NECK: Amulet of Glory

BACKPACK: EMPTY

MINING 'HOW TO'

Here is a list of the process you will be doing:

  • Teleport to Shilo using your gloves
  • Mine the gems in an easy-to-remember pattern
  • DROP 2 OPALS *
  • As gems respawn, repeat the mining pattern
  • Teleport to a bank and dump all the gems
  • REPEAT

*There are 15 total rocks, so after two trips through the rocks, you have 2 extra gems. It's easiest to drop between respawns.

When you start mining, a clear world will be best. Higher level miners will have an easier time bullying others off their world. Lower level miners may have to hop around. Just remember, this is a public mining area, therefore it is ok for it to be a competitive activity.

Once you claim a clear world, it's best to have the rocks respawn in a pattern. Typically, I'll go from east to west on the surface, then run a circle around the underground. You want to be able to easily predict and know which rock will spawn again next. That is the basic approach of how you will be mining.

Optimizing Gear

Familiars:

2953objsprite.gif: Obsidian Golem | Level 73 Summoning | Boosts Mining +7 | Lasts 55 Minutes

2953objspritec.gif: Lava Titan | Level 83 Summoning | Boosts Mining +10 | Lasts 61 Minutes

2953objsprite.gif Any Foraging Familiar can also be beneficial here.

Pickaxes:

2953objsprite.gif2953objsprited.gif Metal Pickaxes, use the best one you can

sacredclaypickaxe.gif Sacred Clay Pickaxes, they are comparable to rune in speed and lasts about 15k xp. Due to their short life span, I never recommend using Sacred Clay Pickaxes for mining.

Penance Horn:

horns.gif Gives double xp without removing the dpick's speed. Exactly how much time it takes to fill and how long they last is still debatable. Use them as you see fit.

XP and GP Rates

As you can see, it's just a simple repetitive task...but how does the XP and GP gains stack up? Here is a graph.

The time taken per run will vary, but the XP and GP gain per run will remain the same. 3.5 minutes is my personal time using a Dragon Pickaxe, Lava Titan, and Level 90 Mining. Higher levels may be faster and lower levels may be slower. If you want to know roughly how much you can potentially make, time yourself for a few runs to find how long it takes. Then find how many runs you can do per hour.

If your average trip takes 6 minutes, then you only do about 10 trips an hour, which comes out to about 20k XP and 500k GP an hour.

CONCLUSION

Hopefully, this may give you a new option for your mining training. You may take advantage of its decent XP rates and good GP gains.

The images aren't working for me.

Nice guide, Im sure I'll use this guide once I decide to train Mining, what Familar would be best to use? (80 Summoning).

The obisidian golem (+7 mining) is your best bet in this case.

The pictures aren't working for me either. On a sidenote, perhaps add that using a Penance horn (master or normal) raises exp by 2x. This will turn everything to aproximate 40-60k experience per hour. I personally used this miningspot several times already, giving me a great alternative to boring granite mining.

the fact that banking takes about 4-5 seconds...I say no. I don't have xp rates for dropping, but I'd imagine it would slow down by a little bit. It would cause you to stop mid-run though the gem rocks though.

If you bank after you mine all the rocks, by the time you get back, they just start respawning. So even for the few seconds where a new player logs into your world, you can still easily claim all the rocks. The main goal is to control the rocks and get them while they're spawning.

Nice guide, but when I was mining these, I never had to go to the ones on the surface, as the rocks below would have always respawned as I got to them. The ones on the surface were incredibly crowded, too, when I went to bank. I am 73 Mining and wasn't using any familiar...

hmm...that is interesting

I suppose if you have a lower level, then that is possible. I can get all of them mined before the first one respawns though. I'll have to make a note about that, since it'd be better to avoid the surface crowds.

....i usually can get rid of other miners within the first 15 minutes or so

  • 5 weeks later...

Also I happend to notice .. that actually wearing a charged glory just speeds up the mining process immensely. Perhaps interesting to test? I am talking about actually 100% faster then without charged glory ;)
