Wikipedia books

I was stumbling through wikipedia because my crumby computer was crumby and at the bottom of the epistemology page was something about a book. So I clicked on it and apparently you can turn wikipedia articles into books. Not only can you make a book from wikipedia but you can choose the title, graphic and other things (there are a bunch of other tools to personalise your book).

So I quickly put one together as a joke making fun of my friend, and went through the process just to try it out. At the end I saw it was only $15.00USD and $2 went to wiki so I was like I'm just going to get it. That was a couple of days ago and I await this book.

has anyone else heard of this? I think its a fantastically obvious and effective idea. I'll include a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PediaPress

Apologies if this is common and I made a complete manus out of myself

I sometimes use this during assignment by downloading the page as a PDF. It's pretty nifty

But surely on nearly all Wikipedia pages, there isn't enough info to justify printing an entire book? And why would you use it for an assignment Jimmy? You shouldn't be referencing Wikipedia... :???:

I guess you might use it to get some background info or an overview of something.

The book has every single link going off the page as well. For example, in year 12 I did an assignment on the Rolling Stones album Exile on Main Street. Turning the Rolling Stones article into a PDF it was almost 600 pages.

Shush you

Wikipedia is always the first place I go :P, if the information is backed up by a link, I use the link when referencing. Hasn't failed me yet.

Yeah, I've considered doing that, but whenver I've tried the link hasn't been great. Or they referece a book I cbf looking up. Come to think of it, my referencing is pretty average at the best of times...

My high school was really anal about using Wikipedia, so I probably won't use Pedia Press or anything associated with the site in the future.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online hasn't failed me yet.

google scholar is where the cool kids go. if you're at a university, you can see most of the articles as well, as they have subscriptions to most of the sites as well, providing real science :D

Luckily, Wikipedia is considered OK on school works here, so no need for fancy sites or whatever. :P

By the way, happy birthday mister. ;)

I'll need to remember that, sounds pretty damn handy.

Professors would kick you in the head if you included any wikipedia references in your reports here.

Without a doubt wikipedia is universally and emphatically frowned upon by the academic community. I don't know anyone who has referenced wiki but the references in wiki are often fine... in my experience.

The books you make can be any length and contain any number of different wiki articles. The reason I found it interesting and thread-worthy was because you can make an interesting non fiction book about whatever you are interested in. I thought people would appreciate the hard copy over looking at a screen.
