Laptop HD Issue

So my aunt's having difficulties with her laptop, and I'm thinkin that port you insert the hard drive into is broken. The laptop doesn't detect the HD at all, and it's fully screwed in. Is there a way to replace the port?

When you turn the laptop on, what message does it give? I expect it's more likely that the hard drive has given up. Did it ever make loud clicks or abnormal noises without being moved?

She said it worked just the other day, and it hasn't made any noises. The message is: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

This is going on a limb, but do you have a spare HD you could test? It sounds similar to what happened to mine, which just died.

The other option is entering the BIOS and checking that HDD0 or HDD1 is set as the primary boot device. When you load up the laptop, it should show a screen giving you an indication of some buttons you can press, e.g F12 to enter the BIOS. Make sure not to change any settings when you've entered the BIOS (or at least not save any changes that you do make). If the HDD is not set as primary or secondary, then that may be the reason (but it's unlikely, and I just want to rule it out).

I do not. I have an external hard drive, but it's just a storage drive, and doesn't have an OS or anything on it. Yes, the HD is the primary boot device.

EDIT: Also, is there a way to test the hard drive to make sure it's the hard drive and not a cracked slot? I've seen a cracked slot happen before, but never knew how it would be fixed.

Just a quick tip, when you are talking about hard drives you usually say HDD (hard disk drive) not HD, back in the day it didn't really matter so people would say one or the other (still usually HDD though) but now everyone knows HD as "high definition" so you really shouldn't use it in reference to hard drives.

Thanks! Sorry about any confusion!
