L0rdAki
Is training magic by combat ever worth it? I love combat Mage but don't want it to go over about 5gp/exp, which is string ammy today. Is this possible, or not? Also, I'm most likely going to raise herblore/prayer with my cash unless someone can suggest a better idea that makes cash...Is it worth just gettin to super antifires (with stew) for the meantime? What else could I do with it? Also, with my stats, no void, best way to kill greens? Super antifires/antifires? Chaos tunnel or Cw? Range or melée? Coal bag worth getting to superheat with, if superheating is a viable method? If combat Mage turns out to be expensive, then I'll turn to that...but I'm saving up for a chaotic weapon :P Best way to get to the different herb/tree patches? L0rdAki
Heh. I wanted a general Mage level that's handy "just in case" and lower then 96...might suck it up. Not sure if earth bolting at aviansies is good, but it's handy to know. Arn't they resistant to Mage anyway, being rangers and all? Tim
Green drag, Super antis (if you can) and Godsword/Zammy Spear. Even with normal melee gear I slaughter them like bats, and you have the same offence skills as me. Aviansies, tank or pray. dont mage because they have good magic defence. I would suggest tanking since its most effective with runes or tabs for bones2peaches. L0rdAki
I'd only be interested in aviansies for Mage exp, not for range ;) Why a godsword for Greens? Zaaps1
Seeing as a magic potion is +5, you should get 91 magic so you can use spellbook swap on lunars. I always have believed that rock lobsters were the best place to train mage. The magic xp by itself is above average, and when you start counting the summoning xp and hp/constitution xp, it's clearly the superior option. ~It's Super Effective! L0rdAki
Agreed, 8gp/exp isn't bad considering the charms, but the major costs are the battle robes, sol, and time spent learning to lure. :| Drops: Black Mask.Clue rewards: Sara Plate, 2 Robins, Some other random stuff. Obtaurian
Then the GP/Exp goes up considerably.. How much are charms valued at each, approximatly? WHO. CARES. Just do it. People were bursting/barraging rock lobsters long before battle robes became useful. You are never going to get satisfying answers. Can I ask you a question? How far have you come since you began posting topics? Gotten any levels? Has your cashpile gotten any larger? Have you made any progress? To put it bluntly, [bleep] off. zotto
Is training magic by combat ever worth it? I love combat Mage but don't want it to go over about 5gp/exp, which is string ammy today. Is this possible, or not? That's an interesting question. I did some rough and quick testing and got in a very preliminary test some decent results at aberrant specters. The experience rate wasn't terribly great - roughly 60k exp per hour using the very modest fire wave (lvl 75) and very crappy outfit. Slayer helmet, d'hai top/bottom, zammy prayer book, mystic boots, staff of light, fury. No ring. ( I never do mage so I don't have any specialized equipment - I actually had to buy a staff of light and even mystic boots just for this test.) There was even a profit of roughly 200k per hour. This was all based on a 13 minute test. I also used a wolpertinger for raising magic and let it attack as well. I will try a surge spell later on. Should give more experience but would it still be profitable? Anyhoo. I sure found it more enjoyable to click once in a while on a aberrant specter than constantly clicking on an item in your inventory. Yesterday I also maged most of my black demon task but it was a bit costly. Decent experience though. Even with my crappy outfit.
L0rdAki
Sounds like it's about the same as alching, then. 60k/hour and breaking even ~= 65k/70k per hour and losing like 20k. Anyone else got any answers to any other questions? Drops: Black Mask.Clue rewards: Sara Plate, 2 Robins, Some other random stuff.
Obtaurian
Spectres have relatively high magic defense, so I wouldn't mage those. Surge spells are a godsend to anyone looking to train magic via combat. Fire surge hits very high (with wolper scrolls, SoL, and ASN [Asian Stream Necklace]). Mage slaying is costly. I've been able to fund it by doing MTK, battlestaffs, and multiple farm runs everyday. If you're mage slaying, always use your points to cancel tasks in search for ice wyrms. They are incredibly good experience. If you have soul split, you usually don't need tank gear. Always use Ahrims and a full slay helm. Use a SW cape or Ardy cape 3 if you need prayer bonus. As a general rule of thumb, don't mage stuff that can mage you back. Berserker curse is your friend if you're using wolper scrolls. Other offensive magic boosting prayers/curses are unnecessary. If you don't have soul split, a BSS is a good shield. I can't really give you a gp/exp. I mage-slay because I hate sitting in a bank. I would definitely recommend it as an alternative way to slay while gaining mage levels. I've gone from 89 to 95 magic this way. EDIT: Mage-slaying is way more than 60k exp/h if you're using fire surge. To put it bluntly, [bleep] off. zotto
18 minute test aberrant specters with same inferior gear and wind surge. roughly 80k exp per hour. And instead of 200k gp profit, a 200k gp loss per hour. Maybe aberrant specters are mage resistant but I was just testing whether you can mage them for free. I guess you can, but probably not with the highest level of spells. With wave you have profit, with surge not. Must say though that I didn't get any special drops in this short unsatisfactory tests. Estimates of profit are probably on the low side. I also started slayering with mage, but the problem is that I am already 99 slayer. There isn't really a strong need for me to stick to slayer tasks. I just wonder what would be nice to mage in combat and not have a loss. So far it seems it is possible with aberrant specters but a medium experience and a tiny profit of 200k per hour. More testing is needed. I will try some other monsters.

L0rdAki
Mage slaying is basically Sol + Good Shield + (ahrims or Battle robes). If you use Battle Robes, no FSH for you. Nifflin
For green dragons do chaos tunnels, it should be better. If you want to be sure try both spots and compare them. Here is what your set up should look like. Niet, torso, tassy, d boots, warrior ring, whip + DFS, fire cape > soul wars cape > trimmed skillcape, barrows gloves, fury. Terrorbird summoned with a super str and super att in your inventory, EE and a piece of food. That being said taking the time for void is definitely worth it, because you will use it for more then just green dragons. If you want to be sure own ct dragons use void + zammy spear. Even without super antis there are so many people piling the drags that you wont die to dragon fire. If you get hit by it you have the EE and food piece. If you decide not to go ct then range is certainly an option however it is inferior to melee and dragons in the wild aren't as good due to the number of people cannoning on every world. PM me in game anytime It's a lot easier then that for an idiot to sound smart on the internet. That's exactly what you're doing right now... just saying.
