Herb Runs

Featured Replies

Well I know HOW to do herb runs, but I had a few questions about WHAT to grow now, based on a few additional factors.

I do 3-6 herb runs a day, probably average 5. Whatever herbs I grow I'll be using to train herblore, or if I grow Torstol, I'll be saving until I can make OVS. These are the factors I'd like to come into play.

1.) XP from cleaning. Now, this may not seem like a lot, but if I am growing 700+ herbs a week, that is ~7k+ herb xp a week, saving me ~250k gp, and that is if I grow avantoe.

2.) Farming XP. I only train farming through herb runs ATM, although I am growing a few spirit trees from MTK. I'd like to be able to grow torstol, so more farming XP at the cost of slightly less profit is acceptable. However, I could also grow higher profit less xp herbs if by doing this watermelon become a viable alternative.

3.) How steady the Herb price is, as well as the seed. Although I will most likely be making these all into X pots, and then Overloads.

The main reason I don't farm trees is this; often when I get on, I only get on for 5 minutes to do my herb run. Trees are too much of a pain also to include at this time.

I always do snapdragons. They are usually the highest profit, although right now I think it's avantoe. They are a lot more xp than avantoe though, you get 98.5 for picking one and 12 for cleaning. The price of the herb fluctuates about 500 gp, but it's still usually the highest profit.

Also, grow limps. The seed is like 200gp, one limp is 2.1k, and you get 3 per seed. If you have the ardy cape, you can grow that one bush plant. It teleports you 5 steps from it, so it only adds like 15 seconds for an extra 5k gp and 700 xp.

More interested in making these herbs into X pots. Also, I think Torstol are more profitable, but I'm not sure.

And I grow marigolds. Cheap seed, 4k+ flower.

I suggest just buying 100 Seeds of all the Herbs needed for overloads, You can coose to go from scratch inclusing irit or kwaurm or just going for Lants, dwarf, avantoe...

I personally just farm toadflax or torstol depening on how big my cash pile is atm.

1593th to 99 Farming - July 08.

My favourite is always lantadyme, they give good xp and profit.

Then making magic pots from them are also good xp and fairly cheap by herby standards. And if you wanna go one step further making extreme mages afterwards is also great.

How profitable are torstol? Or should I only grow 1 each run in My Arms patch, and then 4 lants/avantoe in the others?

You should reevaluate which seeds you're going to be growing if you just want to use the herbs for herblore. Always take into account how much the herb is actually worth on the GE and how much xp you would be getting for making potions with this herb. If there's another herb that gives you a lower gp/xp ratio, sell all your current herbs and buy that type along with its secondaries.

The best method overall would be to find the herb that gives you the best profit, sell them, and then buy up the herbs that give you the lowest gp/xp ratio. Be careful of summoning potions though. Spirit weed is difficult to buy.

Torstol can be risky, but I wont deny it is good xp. I think you need an average of 6 Torstol per herb to break even. Any less than that and you can lose some serious GP. Every torstol seed that dies puts you in a -250k hole.

It would be wise to only plant Torstol in My Arms patch to give the highest changes for survival.

Snaps are great xp for the GP they offer, so most times I advise people to go with those. Just keep an eye on their prices.

I have a Googledocs table somewhere that shows prices and comparisons to each herb type. I'll see if I can track it down later and post it here.

EDIT: here it is. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Aoz7AkXuSwamdE4wVFhZaWM0V2VkbTFvSXhDaDhkd3c&hl=en#gid=1

(Keep in mind prices do not update with GE, so they may be a few days old. Also this table is based on using 5 seeds of the same type. The green is the "estimated" average number of herbs you get a trip for that type.)

FYI: If you have not invested in the farming scroll from dungeoneering it is something any herb farmer NEEDS to do. The ability to get back seeds (especially if they are snapdragon or Torstol) is well worth the short time it takes to buy the scroll.

I'd forget about Torstol. At the current price You'd have to get seven herbs per seed to profit. You would probably come out ahead most of the time but not by much.

So far, the data I've been gathering for a while suggests that on average, you get 7.6 herbs from My Arm's patch, and 6.6 herbs from other patches (including deaths).

Just counting GP, the best herbs to grow are Torstol in My Arm's patch and Avantoe > Ranarr > Toadflax in the other patches (as of post time).

Including cleaning xp, Torstol is still best for My Arm's, and Avantoe > Ranarr > Snap > Lant > Toadflax for the other patches.

Thanks all. This can be locked.

No idea why marigolds can be better in any way... limps are 6k profit/seed, and more xp. That's what you wanted isn't it?
