As incredibly embarrassing as it is to make this thread when I still have another one on the first page, I have a new problem, and Google yielded no results, thus disproving the theory that it holds God-like status.

 

For the past few hours, and only a day after fixing the problem in my last thread, my entire [bleep]ing computer went on strike. Let's do a little breakdown of the individual areas of affliction.

 

Web Browsers

I'm typing this in Firefox, which is somewhat laggy. Internet Explorer is the same way, only to the point that it is completely unusable. Think about that. My IE is even crappier than it usually is. This should give you an idea of the severity of the problem.

 

Games

------------------------

All games freeze upon launch, both launched by Steam, and not launched by it. However, rather than write a detailed description, it's time for a copy-paste of the thread I posted on Steampowered. (I solve my problems using the same methods as Jehovah's witnesses)

 

Seems for the last few hours, all games launched from Steam, whether they're hosted by Steam or not, freeze on launch, though at different points. With Mount and Blade, not hosted by Steam, it's the initial loading screen. With L4D2, it's the Valve logo right at the start, and with Team Fortress 2 its at the menu with the loading sign on the bottom.

 

Trying ctrl-alt-dlt is useless, as 99% of the time it doesn't work, and 1% of the time it takes me to a black screen. A full restart is needed to fix that situation.

At this point, I think reformatting is your best option. Didn't your other thread suggest you might need a new HD as well?

If so, this presents the ultimate question: Will I lose all my [cabbage]?

Reformatting will make you lose all your stuff, yes.

 

But, if you can at least get the computer working to some degree you should be able to back it up.

 

Otherwise, just buy the new hard drive, install windows, and then copy the stuff from the other drive (if possible)

Hmm, so reformatting it is then. How do I do it? And how do I backup my files? (I'm able to buy a new drive if Its needed)

Well in terms of backup, you can buy utilities to do it, but all it's really doing is copy pasting your files to a location of your choice. Depending on exactly what you want to back up a usb key may be sufficient or else you'll need to buy an external HD.

 

To reformat, just stick in your operating system disk, and reinstall windows, it will take care of everything from there on.

I'll use what's already posted here for referrence from here on out.

Whoa whoa whoa, don't reformat yet buddy, you seem new to this reformatting thing.

 

First get a notepad, not on your computer, a real notepad. Write down what chipset you're using, what graphics card you have, networking cards, etc. Then download the drivers and save them on a disc somewhere.

 

THEN you can reformat if you really need to.

I waited 4 days for the damn external HD to get here so I could back up my files, and spent 3 hours reformatting. 4 days. $50. And it didn't even [bleep]ing work. It's gotten so bad that it took me about 10 minutes to get to this page, something that normally takes about 15 seconds. I have absolutely no [bleep]ing idea what could cause this thing to just stop working out of the goddam blue, all I know is that I need to step away from the thing for a few minutes before it takes a [bleep]ing trip to the window.

After reading you're initial post, I'd say reseat the ram.

 

At work, my rule of thumb is: Never reformat, unless it's to low level it to erase sensitive files, but then I run it over with a heavy magnet.

Regular HD's are the same price pretty much.

 

But yeah, reseating the ram sounds good. To reseat the ram, take it out, and put it back in again :P

So the Hd isn't the problem.

 

The vid card might be a problem, who knows.

Mobo, probably not.

 

What Hd is this? Sata? IDE? SSD? If it has those gray ribbon cables, there might be your problem.

 

Judging by the games having trouble coming up, and slow applications, I'd say replace the ram or maybe it's the cpu. Probably the ram though, cpus usually don't die on you.

 

Did you build this pc yourself? Did you buy it premade? What are the specs? Damn I hate doing tech support on the internet, it's a nightmare.

Sorry, I know how hard it can be helping someone that doesn't know what he's doing, especially when it's the internet and you can't just smack my hands away and say "[bleep] off, I'll do it myself."

His other thread gave the appearance that the HD might have been the problem, and if he hasn't replaced it he's still reformatting the same bad drive.

 

But yeah, check the other things first.
